Over two months of COVID-19 shutdowns are causing “unusual or aggressive” behaviour in rats across the United States.
Human lockdowns across the US means these so-called ‘cannibal’ rats don’t have usual staples like restaurant waste and street garbage to eat. This has led to elevated levels of rat aggression being observed in places like New York and New Orleans, CBS says.
“I turn the corner, there’s about 30 rats at the corner, feasting on something in the middle of the street,” Bourbon street tour guide Charles Marsala said.
Apparently they can even devour cars.
It’s a big enough problem that San Diego resident ‘Rat King Dave’ (not his real name) established a website called howtopreventratsfromeatingcarwires.com/.
European share markets closed higher on Monday. After two record-sized drops, Germany’s Ifo business climate index posted its strongest-ever monthly increase in May – a higher than forecast 79.5, up from 74.2 in April.
Still, it was the second lowest reading since German reunification in ~1990, says Commsec.
The Ifo Business Climate Index is a closely followed leading indicator for economic activity in Germany, Europe’s largest economy and #5 globally.
The London Stock Exchange and US markets were closed Monday in observance of the Bank Holiday and Memorial Day, respectively.
The ASX200 was up about 1.4 per cent to 5,695.9 points, an 11-week high, by 11:30am EST. The index has now surged by ~25 per cent since hitting its low point in late March.
