High Voltage: Glimmers of hope for lithium as China’s battery industry shows 20% growth
Mining
Mining
Many observers are asking ‘where to next’ for lithium as the short-term price outlook continues to slump, dropping another 22% since the start of the current financial year following a 67% fall over the 2024 financial year.
But all hope is not lost with China’s lithium battery industry reporting 20% year on year growth from January to June this year and total exports reaching 193.4bn yuan.
According to data from the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology, many Chinese battery manufacturers have also accelerated their plans to build factories overseas, which could be considered as a demand upturn to be met with more lithium requirements.
The International Energy Agency (IEA) already declared batteries the fastest growing clean technology in 2023, with deployment more than doubling year on year.
Last year, strong growth was seen across the battery space including utility-scale battery projects, behind the meter batteries, mini grids and solar home systems for electricity access which added a total 42GW of battery storage capacity globally.
Meanwhile, electric vehicle battery deployment rose by 40% in 2023, with 14m new electric cars, accounting for the vast majority of batteries used in the energy sector.
All is not lost for the lithium sector, with the realities of the growth outlook for lithium batteries grinding against a bearish perception in the mainstream media.

Although CRR is a lithium-focused project development company with its flagship project the Mavis Lake lithium asset in Ontario, Canada, the explorer is up 71% this week on news that desktop studies have kicked off at the Hillgrove South prospect in NSW to test for antimony potential.
The reason why antimony is so hot right now is because China has restricted exports of the commodity, adding to the pile of commodity exports it’s already put the kybosh on, including germanium, gallium and graphite.
Antimony prices have skyrocketed as a result, currently sitting at all-time highs of ~US$24,500t, almost double the price they were only eight months ago.
CRR’s upcoming work will centre on its Hall Peak tenements, a short ~6km southeast of Larvotto Resources (ASX:LRV) Hillgrove deposit, which currently hosts a total resource of 7.264Mt at 1.3% Sb for 93kt of contained antimony.
MTM has made a significant discovery following the recovery of gallium from semiconductor and LED scrap via Flash Joule Heating (FJH) technology, offering a timely solution to the global gallium supply crisis.
Like several other critical minerals, the global supply of gallium has been disrupted due to escalating geopolitical tensions and China’s recent export restrictions – causing prices to soar.
With China controlling 98% of the world’s gallium supply, MTM believes the successful demonstration of gallium recovery is a strategic development that offers a potential solution to the escalating supply crisis affecting the USA and its allies.
“We eagerly anticipate the upcoming bench-scale tests and are optimistic about our potential to transform the gallium supply chain,” MTM CEO Michael Walshe says.
WIN holds 240km2 of granted mining tenure across WA’s Widgiemooltha Dome with exposure to critical metals such as nickel and lithium, but is up this week on news of a new gold acquisition in WA’s Kimberley region.
The company has signed a tenement sale agreement for the acquisition of the portfolio of tenements previously known as the Palm Springs gold project from Meteoric Resources NL (ASX:MEI), 30km south-east of Halls Creek.
Palm Springs comprises an already established high-grade resource of some 357,000oz (5.6Mt at 2.0g/t) of gold based around two resource areas, a production history of 52,000oz refined between 1995 and 1997, and a host of advanced drill targets from more than 60 known gold occurrences on the 100km2 tenement package.
“This pivotal acquisition heralds the end of a challenging period for the company searching for a new strategic direction,” WIN managing director and CEO Steve Norregaard said.
“We believe we have made a great choice in securing a quality gold asset with ample growth upside and a proven production history in what we regard as a very much forgotten gold province.
“Our existing nickel and lithium resource base remains firmly part of the portfolio to complement this new commodity and new project area.”
WIN will now refer to the acquired tenements as the ‘Butchers Creek gold project’, reflective of its primary gold endowment, the historic Butchers Creek gold mine.
While battery metals prices have been soft, gold is trading near record highs of almost $3700/oz.
CZN has launched a drilling program at the Mary Queen target, part of the Mt Gilmore project in northern NSW, which the company believes could host a monster porphyry copper-gold deposit.
The Mary Queen prospect has the mineral chemistry characteristics typical of large porphyry copper-gold systems such as outcropping sulphide mineralisation, favourable hydrothermal alteration, a coincident high-copper-in-soil signature, and geophysical anomalism.
A two-hole diamond drilling program for 1000m will be carried out as an initial test.
“The identification of May Queen as a distinct high priority target, at this very early stage of exploration, provides a great opportunity for Corazon,” CZN managing director Brett Smith said.
