Special Report: Digital Wine Ventures has partnered with Australia Post to launch WINEDEPOT, a trading and logistics platform for Australia’s wine industry.

WINEDEPOT will cater to producers, distributors, importers and retailers of all sizes across the country, allowing them to fulfill orders from inventory reserves held in ‘depots’ servicing key markets

Digital Wine Ventures (ASX:DW8) says the move will significantly reduce delivery times, freight costs and breakages.

The partnership with Australia Post will create a specialised wine distribution service, including immediate roll-out for four major distribution centres around Australia, meaning consumers will get their wine sooner and safer.

Australia Post will provide warehouses, staffing, backend IT systems and infrastructure, reducing the cost for Digital Wine Ventures.

The streamlined warehousing, ordering, processing and delivery system will flow directly into Australia Post’s fulfillment channels and allow same-day delivery, avoiding the need for collection, transfer and sortation and opening up multiple revenue opportunities.

Take that, Amazon

Dean Taylor, Digital Wine Ventures CEO, says WINEDEPOT will provide great competition to the recently-launched Australian arm of Amazon.

“With the arrival of Amazon, every Australian consumer will soon expect fast and free delivery. Any business not offering the same will simply lose market share. WINEDEPOT will provide the wine industry the infrastructure to allow that calibre of service level to be provided viably,” he said.

Taylor also added that the company would use similar relationships to accelerate the roll out of depots in China. Digital Wine Ventures plans to boost Australian wine representation in China, and recently made a 17,000-bottle sale in its shift to a B2B sales model.

Paul Hersbach, head of growth products at Australia Post, said WINEDEPOT would not only improve logistics and lower costs for wine companies, but also be a big win for consumers.

“Our partnership with WINEDEPOT provides the wine industry with a specialised distribution service that will not only save money but also improve the consumer delivery experience,” he said.

“We believe that it will help many wine businesses increase their online sales as they place their inventory closer to end consumers and offer same day evening delivery as a standard service.”
