Did you know silver has an important role to play in the world’s energy transition? While the precious metal has historically been a consolation prize to its fancier cousin gold, silver’s demand is currently being driven by its use in solar panels, clean energy technologies, electric vehicles and more.

Global investment manager Sprott has observed a strong rally in silver demand and pricing, much like its sibling gold throughout 2024. The past 12 months marks the third year silver demand has exceeded supply, largely due to its use in photovoltaic panels, the key technology in solar panels. Industrial demand for silver this year is forecast to climb a further 9% to mark a record high.

Coupled with demand from investors looking to precious metals as a safe haven from geopolitical risk and market volatility, it’s contributed to a charging spot price. Silver climbed past $US30/oz again in the past month. Before this year that level hadn’t been breached since 2013.
