• Historical copper intersections at the Tambourah project have explorer Riversgold pleased
  • One particular intercept measured to 30.5m at 1.1% copper
  • Chairman David Lenigas says boots will hit the ground from the end of next week

Special report: Riversgold has identified historical copper intersections of up to 30.5m at 1.1% copper from exploration carried out in the 1970’s at Tambourah.

Riversgold’s (ASX:RGL) Tambourah project covers some 264km2 of prospective tenure in WA’s Pilbara region, 164km southeast of Port Hedland.

Exploration to date has centred on the discovery of lithium with recent work successfully identifying nine new lithium targets during a 3,070-sample geochemical program.

Several of the targets sit in magnetic lows or in and around magnetic breaks and are seen as high priority targets.

But while exploration has centred on lithium, the tenements also boast the potential for gold and copper mineralisation.

12km strike with elevated copper

A compilation of geochemical data completed by RGL and previous explorers has highlighted a clear trend of 12km of strike that has elevated copper anomalism.

Drilling by Hawkstone Minerals during 1970-71 comprised 27 percussion drill holes for 1,787m and intersected copper up to 1.1% copper over 30.5m while a limited rock chip sampling program by DeGrey Mining (ASX:DEG) in 2008 resulted in assays up to 13.8% copper.

RGL plans to be on site next week to validate the historical rock chips results and will assess methods for advancing copper exploration.

‘A very clear copper corridor’

“The RGL team has reviewed the geochemical data generated from our past lithium programs and has identified a very clear copper corridor running north-south right through the centre of the tenement,” RGL chairman David Lenigas says.

“Historical drilling and high-grade chip samples, that coincide with the newly identified copper corridor, add to the significance of this discovery.

“We plan to have people back on the ground from the end of next week to continue with exploration.”
