Our High Voltage column wraps all the news driving ASX stocks with exposure to lithium, cobalt, graphite, nickel, rare earths, manganese, magnesium, and vanadium.
2022 was a euphoric journey of battery metals price discovery and hundreds of ASX explorers, mostly lithium, went along for the ride.
So far, 2023 has been a more grounded experience.
Lithium is coming off those outrageous highs with hard rock spodumene prices hardest hit, down +16% year-to-date.
Benchmark Mineral Intelligence’s graphite and cobalt indexes are down 5.7% and ~21%, respectively, over the same period.
The outlook remains overwhelmingly positive. But as the hype balloon deflates, those stocks riding sentiment alone, which is most of them, tend to tumble back into mediocrity.
In 2023, 190 of the stocks on our 270-strong list have suffered losses; 56 of those by 30% or more.
Just 69 have made gains; 17 of those by 30% or more.
Within that 17 are some good exploration stocks – those with experienced leaders, standout projects, and strong news flow. Companies like this often hold up better during the average bear.
PMT dual-listed on the ASX late last year, raising $4,200,000 at an issue price of $0.60 per CDI.
It spiked hard on debut, thanks in part to the magic touch of modern lithium legend Ken Brinsden.
Brinsden, who sits on the board as non-exec chair and director, helped turn Pilbara Minerals (ASX:PLS) from a penny dreadful into a $15 billion lithium giant.
It is already living up to the hype, last month unveiling an incredible 156.9m-long drill hit grading 2.12% Li2O from 176m — including 25m of 5.04% Li2O – at the CV5 Pegmatite, part of the Corvette property in Canada.
The ore grade of most hard rock lithium mines around the world ranges between 0.8% and 1.5% Li2O.
An initial mineral resource estimate planned for the first half of 2023.
The former bauxite explorer rerated heavily last year after reaching an out-of-court settlement over a protracted 2018 dispute for Kangankunde, one of the world’s largest REE projects outside China.
The gains have continued in 2023 as the company gears up for a maiden mineral resource estimate in the second quarter of 2023.
The most recent drilling assays intersected rare earths at grades of up to 14.4% TREO, with an average 21% concentration of magnet rare earths neodymium and praseodymium.
Significant hits included 179m at 2.2% TREO including a best intercept to date of 35m at 3.94% TREO from surface, 210m from surface to end of hole averaging 1.92% TREO and 162m from surface to end of hole at 2.16% TREO.
“Assays reported from the first 14 holes drilled to date have consistently shown high-grade, very broad intercepts, a high NdPr ratio and non-radioactive mineralisation,” said LIN CEO Alistair Stephens, former MD of billion dollar capped rare earths developer Arafura (ASX:ARU).
“As drilling advances, we expect these characteristics to be repeated, underpinning our confidence that Kangankunde is without doubt shaping up as one of the world’s most significant rare earths deposits.
“Our Mineral Resource Estimate to be reported in the second quarter of calendar 2023 will confirm this.”
About a year ago PSC sold its 72.7Mt Arcadia lithium development in Zimbabwe to a subsidiary of lithium-ion battery material producer, Zhejiang Huayou Cobalt Co, for ~$466m net.
It returned most of that to shareholders.
The veteran team at PSC is now going back to its exploration roots with the Omaruru lithium project in Namibia. The company will progressively acquire up to 51% in Omaruru, with an option to go up to 85%.
The project contains over 60 visible, outcropping pegmatites of variable size, some of which (notably Karlsbrunn) have been subject to limited, near surface, historical lithium and beryl mining.
Only three pegmatites have been the subject of drilling to date, which returned results of up to 23m grading 0.99% Li2O from a downhole depth of 130m and 10m at 1.06% Li2O from only 2m.
An initial 2,000m of drilling at Omaruru wrapped up last month, focused on the Karlsbrunn and Brockmans pegmatites.
Return of assay results is expected during the current quarter.
It also has a project called Step Aside in Zimbabwe, where recent drilling hit “encouraging grades and widths” like 7.4m @ 1.28% Li2O from 43.6m.
Follow up drilling will kick off in February, PSC says.
PSC had a $30.3m cash pile at the end of December “to support future growth activities anchored on its battery and electrification minerals strategy”.
Early this year, small but advanced lithium explorer ESS received a takeover offer from Tianqi Lithium Energy Australia (TLEA), a JV between Tianqi Lithium (51%) and IGO (ASX:IGO) (49%).
Growth-hungry TLEA currently owns an integrated lithium business in WA, including a 51% interest in the Greenbushes lithium operation and the Kwinana lithium hydroxide refinery.
The deal valued ESS at ~$136m, or 50c per share –a 44.9% premium to the last closing price.
The Scheme is subject to various conditions including approval by ESS shareholders at a meeting proposed to be held in April 2023.
ESS’ Pioneer Dome lithium project in WA contains an actual resource (more than most ASX explorers can boast) of 11.2Mt at 1.16% lithium.
A scoping study put a $293m price on developing the Pioneer Dome mine, which would produce 193,745t of 5.7% Li2O spodumene concentrate a year at average life of mine cash costs of $1030/t.
The mine would boast an NPV of between $275-458m, with a base case of $367m, base case internal rate of return of 40% and payback period of 1.7 years against a 7.3 year mine life extracting 8.8Mt of ore at 1.11% Li2O.
ESS assumes construction and investment commencing in July 2024 with first production in January 2026.
Led by former Altura Mining GM Chris Evans, the late 2021 IPO was one of the hottest stocks of 2022.
It has continued that run of form into 2023, thanks to some impressive maiden assays from the Adina lithium project in Quebec, Canada.
Hits like 1.34% Li2O over 107.6m prompted WR1 to ratchet up a drilling program this year from 5000m to 20,000m.
Drilling is also ongoing at the Cancet project, which is near Allkem’s 40Mt James Bay and Nemaska’s 55Mt Whabouchi deposits (both ~1.4% Li2O).
There are plans to release maiden resources at both Adina and Cancet later in 2023.
