High Voltage: Rare earths at the heart of Trump tariff saga this week

Rare earths are in the news again this week with US President Trump’s 50% import tariff set to hit Brazil on August 6 – spurring the country’s Lula administration to plan relief measures for companies impacted.
For context, the tariff is a massive jump from the initial 10% figure proposed by the White House.
It could represent a material short-term headwind for Brazil’s resources and mining sector, which is currently viewed by countries around the world as a safe alternative supply hub to China’s stranglehold on critical minerals.
It comes after months of trade tariff tension, with Trump imposing severe export restrictions that disrupted critical supply chains across the automotive, robotics and defence industries.
Those export restrictions amplified the urgency for countries to secure alternative, domestic or allied sources of supply.
However, last month US President Trump announced a deal with China to resume exports of rare earth minerals and magnets.
Then just a few days later rumours spread that the White House had heard pitches involving a potential peace deal with the Kachin Independence Army rebels who control most of Myanmar’s rich deposits of heavy rare earths – which China heavily depends upon for supply.
The Trump tariff saga has more twists and turns than the storyline of a 2000s reality TV show.
While the season finale is yet to air, the hunt is heating up for rare earths supply that doesn’t rely on China.

The company has received a non-binding and conditional Letter of Support from the Australian Government’s Export Finance Australia (EFA) and progressed to the Northern Australia Infrastructure Facility’s (NAIF) “Due Diligence Phase” for the financing of its Speewah fluorite project in WA.
TVN is in an incorporated joint venture (IJV) with leading Japanese trading house and Fortune Global 500 company Sumitomo Corporation and Japan Organization for Metals and Energy Security (JOGMEC), an incorporated administrative agency of the Japanese Government. The aim of the IJV is to develop the project as Australia’s first fluorite mining and processing operation to produce acid grade fluorspar (>97% calcium fluorite) for export into global markets.
The Australian government added fluorine to Australia’s Critical Minerals List in December 2023. Fluorite ore is used to produce commercial grade fluorspar products. Downstream products are used in strategically important sectors, including semiconductor manufacturing, electric vehicle batteries, refrigerants, aluminium fluxing and uranium enrichment.
The company will now prepare a formal investment proposal for consideration by NAIF as it looks to complete a feasibility study funded by its IJV partners.
St Geroge has discovered high grade earths up to 13.4% TREO just 1km from the existing large-scale rare earths deposit at the Araxá project in Brazil.
The company says the find supports potential to expand the large carbonatite-hosted resource at Araxá, which is the same style of deposit as the two major producing REE mines outside of China – Mountain Pass in California and Mt Weld in Western Australia.
Notably, the find also hit high grade magnet rare earths, with the ratio of NdPr to TREO up to 35% with NdPr values up to 3.33% NdPr.
“With an existing JORC compliant rare earths resource that is already world-class, we are excited by the growth potential that this new discovery highlights,” executive chairman John Prineas said.
“We will now prioritise follow-up drilling with RC and diamond drilling to scope out the extent of this new mineralised area which has potential to significantly add to the existing large-scale JORC compliant resource at the project.”
Vital Metals has completed a scoping study for the Tardiff deposit in Canada, which considers developing a hard rock starter open pit that extracts only 15% of the total resource estimate of 192.7Mt at 1.3% total rare earth oxides (TREO).
Robust financial outcomes included: Pre-tax NPV8 of US$776M and 32% IRR, Post-tax NPV8 US$445M and 25.5% IRR – all at a base case commodity pricing of US$90/kg of neodymium and praseodymium, US$1322/kg for terbium and US$338/kg for dysprosium.
The average annual production estimate of 56,000t of concentrate at a grade of 26.4% TREO and 3.3% Nb2O5, with 45.1% global TREO recovery over an initial 11-year life of mine (LOM).
“The study has outlined the potential to build a viable, long term rare earths and niobium project at Tardiff,” managing director Lisa Riley said.
A pre-feasibility study (PFS) is potentially on the card to improve economics via the additional extensive metallurgical testing to optimise TREO and niobium recoveries, prove the payability of niobium and test the recovery of zircon.
This week the company announced it had successfully produced a mixed rare earth oxide (MREO) containing 94% total rare earth oxides (TREO) from its flagship North Stanmore heavy rare earth project in WA.
“To produce a 94% TREO mixed rare earth oxide in Australia from a clay-hosted system, that is enriched with heavy rare earths is to our knowledge, a first in Australia and sets a new benchmark for the whole sector,” CEO and executive director Brendan Clark said.
“This result came from a large representative composite of 453 samples taken across the North Stanmore project area that average 525ppm TREO.
“This shows the samples were not ‘cherry picked’ and highlights the true commercial value of the North Stanmore deposit.”
VTM says the result further demonstrates the technical viability of its proprietary processing flowsheet and its ability to produce market ready, high value MREO product without the need for additional capex concentration and cracking processes.
