- Spodumene prices have hit +US$1000/t
- Sector sentiment turning positive thanks to battery storage demand
- Liontown and Mineral Resources make market waves this week
Our High Voltage column wraps all the news driving ASX stocks with exposure to lithium, cobalt, graphite, nickel, rare earths, and vanadium.
Spodumene prices have surged to over US$1000/t thanks to booming demand from battery energy storage systems and a wave of supply discipline from large producers in the West and China.
Prices for the hard rock lithium concentrate tumbled from highs of over US$8000/t in late 2022 to as little as under US$600/t earlier this year, but as rebounds from lows get faster, analysts have turned more optimistic that the sector is heading into recovery mode.
A note yesterday from Argonaut’s Hayden Bairstow suggested demand for BESS – big batteries – had become a major driver for the lithium market, sending sentiment for the sector positive.
“BESS demand is up ~75% YoY and is set to account for 20% of global battery demand in 2025,” analyst Hayden Bairstow said.
“Pricing cycles are becoming shorter with the previous decline and subsequent price recovery in spot spodumene prices occurring is just over 40 days.
“We expect spot prices to resume a move higher as more supply growth delays are outlined, particularly by larger industry participants.
“The strong rise in the spot price presents modest upside risk to our base case earnings forecasts for our coverage universe.”
As a result, Argonaut also upgraded price targets for Liontown Resources (ASX:LTR), Core Lithium (ASX:CXO), Pilbara Minerals (ASX:PLS) and Wildcat Resources (ASX:WC8).
“We have upgraded price targets for LTR and CXO by 15% and for PLS and WC8 by 11% to reflect the rise in spot prices,” Bairstow said.
“We reiterate our positive view on lithium equities, and reiterate our BUY ratings on PLS, MIN, IGO and LTR and SPEC BUY ratings on CXO, PMT and WC8.”
And Argonaut isn’t the only ones feeling optimistic, JPMorgan recently upped its forecasts too from US$800/t to US$1100/t in 2026 and US$1200/t in 2027, 50% above previous predictions.
Liontown and MinRes make market waves
The enthusiasm of investors to a wave of broker upgrades and optimism on pricing is palpable. If punters have been sitting on the side of the pool, they’ve been eagerly waiting for opportunities to jump back in.
Liontown was up more than 12% on Thursday. IGO (ASX:IGO) surged by more than 15%, MinRes fell after big gains on Wednesday (more on that in a sec), PLS ran more than 10% higher and Core was up close to 25%. Juniors like Delta Lithium (ASX:DLI), which also announced a rubidium resource at its Mt Ida lithium project, was up close to 14%, with Wildcat Resources (ASX:WC8) almost 12% higher.
There have been a few sector wide updates that have caught the eye as well. None more so than the deal that saw MinRes sell 30% of its operating lithium portfolio – the Wodgina and Mt Marion mines – to Korea’s POSCO in a $1.2bn deal.
It values MinRes’ 50% stakes at roughly $3.9 billion, or around 45% above consensus.
As part of the investment, POSCO will receive spodumene concentrate in proportion to its 30% interest, underpinning its future investment in new downstream processing facilities.
“This first-of-its-kind investment by a major Korean company into Australian lithium is a milestone for our industry,” MIN chairman Malcolm Bundey said.
“It signals the growing global demand for Tier 1 hard rock lithium assets and the confidence international partners have in Australia’s ability to meet that demand.
“By supporting the development of new global conversion capacity, this partnership will play an important role in diversifying the global lithium supply chain and strengthen bilateral ties between Australia and Korea in critical minerals.
“This continues our stated commitment to strengthening our financial position and leveraging our core competencies of building world-class assets and recycling capital to position us for the future while maintaining a material position in global lithium markets with Tier 1 partners.”
There’s more action taking place.
Liontown announced this week that it’s teaming with Metalshub to run its first digital spodumene auction for 10,000 tonnes from Kathleen Valley in a move expected to bring some pricing transparency to the lithium market. We’ve seen how this went down back when PLS ran a similar, very public, platform called BMX, helping stir the market into a frenzy as prices for its auctions surged in 2021 and 2022.
It no longer sells spodumene on the platform, preferring discrete spot sales outside its long term contracts that the firm doesn’t report to the ASX. But Liontown appears to have taken up the mantle.
“From the inception of our marketing strategy, Liontown has been clear with its position that a transparent, auditable and liquid price index is crucial to establishing a long-term sustainable lithium industry,” CEO Tony Ottaviano said.
“Utilising Metalshub for our first digital spot sales auction will improve price transparency for spodumene, giving more customers an opportunity to bid on Liontown cargoes.”
The company’s first auction of spodumene concentrate will be held on 19 November 2025.

Weekly Small Cap Standouts
ABx Group (ASX:ABX)
ABx has commenced drilling to expand the high grade T8 rare earth elements (REE) mineralisation that its scout drill campaign discovered in May 2025 at its Tasmanian project.
The first 3 holes have encountered the target horizon at surface, within 0.5 metres depth.
The company says its Tasmanian rare earth projects are suited to early low cost production because they are shallow, ionic absorption clay type of rare earth resources enriched in the most critical rare earths dysprosium (Dy) and terbium (Tb).
“China’s restriction on exports of critical heavy rare earths, especially Dy & Tb, sends a clear message to the global market and ABx is in a unique position with its Dy & Tb-rich shallow clayhosted rare earth deposit in a stable jurisdiction,” MD and CEO Dr Mark Cooksey said.
“Dy & Tb are vital for many products including modern cars, phones, military technologies and offshore wind turbines.
“This is recognised by the industry, for example our MoU to supply rare earth feedstock to Ucore, which is planning a Strategic Metals Complex in Louisiana with the support of the US Government.”
Delta Lithium (ASX:DLI)
The company has announced an updated resource estimate for its Mt Ida project of 14.8Mt at 1.21% lithium, 170ppm tantalum and 0.42% rubidium.
The rubidium product has the potential to improve the Mt Ida Lithium project economics and add an additional revenue stream, as the Lithium Whole of Ore Flotation (WOF) flowsheet extracts rubidium in the mica pre-float stage with recoveries averaging ~90%.
Plus, rubidium applications are growing globally with placement on the critical minerals list of the United States, Japan and many European countries.
The project is fully permitted for both open pit and underground mining, and downstream processing and vertical integration studies are well underway.
“This is a very positive milestone for the critical mineral credentials of Mt Ida, with the delineation of a high-grade maiden rubidium resource accompanying the lithium and tantalum,” MD James Croser said.
“This presents as a worthy target for value-add and co-product revenue generation with little change to the current proposed process flowsheet. We will continue to seek understanding of the global significance of our rubidium in a very opaque market, dominated almost entirely by Chinese producers.”
Core Lithium (ASX:CXO)
Core has announced an optimised mine plan for its Finniss lithium operation, delivering first ore within 1 month of mobilisation, and reducing Grants pre-production capital by $35-45m.
Grants will now be initially mined as an open pit and will transition later to an underground mine.
The company has also increased the ore reserve estimate at Grants by 33% to 1.53Mt at 1.42% Li2O, delivering a 44% lift in contained Li2O metal.
“Collectively, these changes lower capital intensity, support the ongoing strategic funding process, and strengthen Finniss as a compelling restart with a robust, independently supported operating plan,” CEO Paul Brown said.
Core’s shares surged as the ASX lithium sector ran hot on Thursday, given as a restart operation its Finniss project would have enormous leverage to rising lithium prices. It was shut in early 2024 as prices sunk.
CXO shares have more than doubled this year so far.
Charger Metals (ASX:CHR)
Niobium drilling is underway at the company’s Lake Johnston project, consisting of a 3,000m RC program targeting five priority lithium targets at the Mt Gordon prospect, funded by Rio Tinto Exploration (RTX), which also have coincident gold and niobium prospectivity.
Previous soil sampling has already defined a large niobium anomaly 1.8 km by 1.7 km in the south of the Mt Gordon prospect.
As part of the current RC drill programme, Charger has commenced drilling 4 holes into the initial niobium target.
