- Lilac is at an inflection point in innovating Direct Lithium Extraction tech
- The tech promises to lower cost and is a more sustainable extraction from brines
- Lilac’s backed by BMW I Ventures investment
Our High Voltage column wraps all the news driving ASX stocks with exposure to lithium, cobalt, graphite, nickel, rare earths, and vanadium.
Lilac Solutions – known for its ion exchange direct lithium extraction tech – says its not just hype, the technology could close the gap to unlock the commercial viability of lithium brine resources to meet future EV demand.
Evaporation ponds are the simplest way to extract lithium from brine, but they have only been successful on a large scale at two projects in the Atacama Desert, where brine has the world’s highest lithium concentration – around 2000ppm. And even with these high lithium grades, evaporation ponds typically recover only around 50% of the lithium.
DLE tech has been around for years in water treatment, but now lithium brine players are looking to the tech to produce higher quality and more environmentally friendly lithium – essentially because brine is pumped into a tank where ion exchange beads latch onto the lithium and then the remaining water is then released (sans lithium) back into the aquifer, meaning less of an environmental footprint for a project.
Although it’s yet to be proved on a commercial scale for lithium extraction, Lilac president and chief technology officer David Snydacker says the tech promises to “redefine the lithium industry with a new approach to brine production that is low cost, environmentally friendly, and scalable.”
“It’s a pivotal time for the lithium industry,” he said. “As China achieves unparalleled economies of scale across the electric vehicle supply chain, U.S. and European companies are working to adopt new technologies to reduce costs and build diversified supply chains.
“For lithium producers, this means adopting new technology to unlock brine resources with lower costs and at new sites closer to home.
“These [DLE] technologies are designed to harvest lithium from diverse brine resources around the world, including not only traditional salt flats but also lakes, oilfields, and geothermal power plants.
“Unlocking the commercial viability of these brine resources will empower us to meet future EV battery demand with a more affordable and more diversified supply chain.”
Economic lithium extraction on the cards
Lilac is working on its own lithium extraction project on Utah’s Great Salt Lake, and has successfully completed a demonstration plant for Lake Resources (ASX:LKE) Kachi demonstration plant in Argentina.
They even scored an investment from BMW I Ventures – so it’s fair to say there’s some hardcore followers hopeful the tech will lead to the lithium promised land.
Syndacker says Lilac’s Ion Exchange (IX) technology can handle a wide variety of brine chemistries, all while delivering high lithium recoveries at a low cost of production.
“This technology also reduces consumption of fresh water by 10x,” he said.
“This breakthrough enables large-scale lithium production with attractive project economics for brine resources in the U.S. and around the world.”
He’s confident the tech will only get better and better, and that we’re at an inflection point for DLE innovation.
“We are on the verge of transforming lithium production with a technology that promises to deliver faster, cleaner, and cheaper lithium extraction for brine resources globally,” he said.
“With IX technology leading the way, we’re setting a new standard for modern lithium extraction, making it more efficient, sustainable, and scalable to support the electric vehicle revolution.”

Weekly Small Cap Standouts
AGY has defined a scheduled pathway to deliver the 12,000tpa Rincon lithium project engineering and definitive feasibility study, targeting a final investment decision during H2 2025.
Feasibility and engineering works are currently progressing in conjunction with international engineering consulting services firms Lycopodium and Saxum.
These works utilise key process and operational parameters, test data and inputs, mechanical design improvements, and learnings from the 2000tpa demonstration facility operations to support an expedited development schedule towards completing the DFS and achieving an FID.
This is scheduled to support commencing early site works, procuring long-lead items, completing front-end engineering design, and commencing construction works by end-2025.
LU7 is progressing its DFS for the Bécancour lithium refinery with plans to reach completion next quarter.
Since releasing the PFS in September, the Hatch/LU7 project team has been working at full speed to finalise capital cost estimates for the upcoming DFS.
While the process designs and equipment outlined in the PFS remain unchanged, the next crucial step involves obtaining the remaining fixed-price quotations from vendors.
Design criteria documents for all engineering disciplines have been finalised, and with 80% of supplier interactions now complete, the engineering team is moving toward finalising material take-offs and related deliverables based on the reference plant.
In parallel, the procurement strategy is complete, and efforts are now focused on refining the capital cost estimate to achieve an accuracy of ±20% with minimal reliance on factored estimates.
