High Voltage: Germany and Canada team up for critical minerals processing

Our High Voltage column wraps all the news driving ASX stocks with exposure to lithium, cobalt, graphite, nickel, rare earths, and vanadium.
- Germany and Canada to collaborate on critical minerals
- China disrupts global supply chains
- Europe needs to wheel and deal with Chinese EV makers on batteries
This week, concerns over China’s export curbs have pushed Germany and Canada to sign a declaration of intent to strengthen cooperation on critical minerals processing, refining and recycling.
China’s halt of exports of rare earths and related magnets earlier in the year has disrupted global supply chains, with automakers, aerospace firms, semiconductor producers and military contractors still reeling from the blow.
The Germany-Canada deal will see the two countries foster collaboration around critical minerals like lithium, rare earth elements, copper, tungsten, gallium, germanium and nickel by advancing joint projects through both public and private investment.
They also plan to encourage stronger commercial partnerships and research collaboration between companies and financial institutions.
The agreement was announced in Berlin during Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney’s visit to Germany and was accompanied by several industry deal announcements including between Canada’s Troilus Gold and Hamburg-based Aurubis for future copper concentrate supply, and an MoU between Torngat Metals and Germany’s Vacuumschmelze for rare earth supply.
Interestingly on the battery manufacturing side of things, Bloomberg Hyperdrive’s Ryan Fisher noted yesterday that Europe needs to be wheeling and dealing with Chinese EV makers BYD and CATL if it wants to be even slightly competitive.
Asia’s biggest economy controls the majority of global refining capacity for battery metals and accounts for 83% of global cell manufacturing, according to BloombergNEF’s most recent Electric Vehicle Outlook.
And while the European Union has injected billions into local battery makers, there have been high-profile setbacks like bankruptcies of Britishvolt in the UK and Northvolt in Sweden.
“European policymakers are increasingly focused on protectionist measures but implementing them will be a challenge,” Fisher said.
“Subsidy schemes should be redesigned to foster collaboration and help the sector scale.
“Brussels has little choice but to change its rules and acknowledge the realities of China’s dominance.
“It could start by adjusting how money will be spent from its future European Competitiveness Fund, part of the EU’s €2 trillion 2028-2034 budget proposal.
“Making foreign investments contingent on teaming up with a local joint venture partner could be a smart move — and one right out of Beijing’s playbook.”

Weekly Small Cap Standouts
Bayan Mining and Minerals (ASX:BMM)
Investors have shown great confidence in BMM and its Californian gold and critical minerals strategy with strong support for a placement.
The placement to new and existing investors raised $3.27 million at 20 cents a share, representing a 47.8% premium to the 15-day VWAP.
Funds will help the company step up exploration efforts at the Desert Star and Desert Star North projects.
BMM director Fadi Diab said the company was well positioned to define and advance high-priority targets following the completion of sampling.
“The strategic location of our projects, within close proximity to MP Materials’ world-class Mountain Pass rare earth mine and Dateline Resources’ Colosseum gold mine, highlights the exceptional potential of our ground,” he said.
“This funding allows us to rapidly progress exploration in a district that is both geologically proven and strategically important to the North American critical minerals supply chain.”
Enterprise Metals (ASX:ENT)
The company is gearing up to start aircore drilling at its Murchison rare earths project next month, which is along the interpreted strike of Victory Metals (ASX:VTM) flagship North Stanmore REE Project.
The plan is for 23 holes to test the potential for REE minerals along a prominent magnetic anomaly which is on the same structural corridor associated with Victory’s REE mineralisation.
Vital Metals (ASX:VML)
A two-tranche placement of $6.8 million will enable Vital Metals (ASX:VML) to advance testwork at its Nechalacho Upper Zone project in Canada which includes the Tardiff REE and niobium deposit.
In the first tranche US company Strategic Resources (SR) will invest A$3m and Vital will issue 28.59m shares at 10.5c giving SR an initial 19.52% interest.
Tranche 2 is subject to shareholder approval and will see Vital issue 36.59m shares to accredited US investors, raising A$3.8m.
SR has worked with Tardiff and North T REE enriched samples for two years delivering promising results for the application of an economic beneficiation process using proprietary Dry Field Force Extraction (DFFE).
Vital plans for a DFFE facility to be operating at North T starting in the Canadian summer 2026.
One of the key objectives of the SR investment is to continue testing and scaling up the technology.
Metallium (ASX:MTM)
Metallium (ASX:MTM) has teamed up with Rice university to test whether its Flash Joule Heating (FJH) technology can directly separate individual REEs.
So far, the tech has been proven to upgrades REE intermediates (e.g. monazite, MREC) into high-grade solvent extraction (SX)-ready product, unlocking higher payables and avoiding foreign-owned toll refineries.
The company now wants to determine if it can simplify or even bypass SX altogether, which could potentially reduce the reliance on China – which currently controls over 90% of global rare earths refining.
A noble goal considering recent Chinese export restrictions on magnet alloy exports forced automakers to suspend production, underlining the fragility of supply chains and the urgency of alternatives.
Plus, the FJH tech is fast and scalable, with units deployable in under 12 months, far quicker than constructing new SX facilities.
“Our Rice University collaboration is tackling the next frontier: using FJH to separate individual REEs directly, potentially bypassing solvent extraction,” MD and CEO Michael Walshe said.
“With SX plants taking years, vast capex and footprint, and massive solvent use, even partial success would be transformative.
“This positions Metallium for near-term revenues from partnerships and licensing, and long-term leadership in REE refining.”
Power Minerals (ASX:PNN)
PNN has reported exceptionally high-grade clay rich rare earths intersections from its Santa Ann project in Brazil, including up to 43,385ppm (or 4.34%) TREO.
Best results included 1m at 43,385ppm TREO from 11m, containing 26.0% MREO and 1m at 7,748ppm niobium from 12m.
The plan now is to work towards a mineral resource estimate, with the company confident these consistent grades indicate a potential world-class and advanced exploration opportunity within the critical mineral sector.
“These high grades from near surface are indicating a potential world class and advanced exploration opportunity with critical minerals for Power,” MD Mena Habib said.
