With lithium prices languishing near three-year lows and showing few signs of a hasty recovery, attention is now turning to whether miners will be forced to rein in supply of the battery metal, Bloomberg says.
The price of the battery metal has plunged around 80% since late 2022, with spot prices of lithium carbonate in China hovering near their lowest since March, 2021.
Benchmark Minerals Intelligence forecasts a glut out to 2027, due to slowing growth in electric-vehicle adoption and increased supply.
Already some smaller producers have cut output in response, like Core Lithium (ASX:CXO) who announced it would halt operations at its Finniss project in the NT.
The market is expected to see a growth in supply of 32% in 2025, outpacing demand expansion of 23%, with the surplus set to peak in 2027 before a deficit returns at end of the decade.
According to S&P Global Commodity Insights lead metals and mining research analyst Alice Yu, a prolonged period of low lithium prices could “trigger a renewed wave of mine supply cuts and project delays.”
The question now is, will the big boys follow suit?
“Clearer indications of the intentions of some top miners may be revealed in the coming weeks with the release of quarterly production reports or earnings,” Bloomberg said.
“The insights from Pilbara Minerals (ASX:PLS), Mineral Resources (ASX:MIN), Albemarle and Arcadium Lithium (ASX:LTM) may provide clues on what the supply response might look like.”
Pilbara Minerals produced a record of 725,300t spodumene concentrate in FY24, forecasting a lift yesterday to 800,000-840,000t in FY25.

The company released its quarterly report, highlighting the receipt of a letter of endorsement from the local community to commence activities on the Cross Lake lithium project in Canada.
“This endorsement is particularly meaningful given the potential for a large scale lithium opportunity in the region,” managing director Christopher Piggott said.
LM1 also nabbed an initial C$100,000 government grant under the Manitoba Mineral Development Fund during the quarter.
Results from the recently completed summer field program at the project are expected to assist the planned drilling later this year and the company is also advancing prospective copper, gold and silver prospects.
The company has signed a term sheet with major Chinese rare earth supplier Shenghe Resources for a $96m investment and fully funded project solution for its Ngualla project in Tanzania.
Shenghe will subscribe for a 50% interest in Ngualla Group UK, which holds an 84% interest in the project, and will provide a fully funded solution with no requirement for Peak to contribute further equity funding towards the development of the project.
The company says its an opportunity to leverage Shenghe’s proven rare earth experience and development expertise.
“With the benefit of strong support from our partners, Shenghe and the Government of Tanzania, the Ngualla project is positioned to become the world’s next rare earth operation,” PEK chairman Russell Scrimshaw said.
“Importantly, the Ngualla Project will benefit from a fully funded solution, which will avoid the need for further equity funding from Peak shareholders.”
The companies are targeting to finalise binding transaction documentation by the end of September and a final investment decision by the end of December 2024.
Miramar has raised $1.58m via an entitlement offer which will primarily fund upcoming exploration programmes at the Bangemall nickel-copper-cobalt-platinum-group-elements projects in the Gascoyne region of WA and the Gidji JV project near Kalgoorlie.
The company has also been advised by the Australian Taxation Office that its Junior Minerals Exploration Incentive application for the 2024/2025 financial year has been accepted and has received an allocation of up to $450,000.
JMEI credits will be distributed to all shareholders that are an Australian resident and who participated in capital raising activities between 1 July 2024 and 30 June 2025 (including the entitlement offer).
Initial results from phase 2 diamond drilling at the Rushworth gold tenement package have returned results including 0.24m at 8.8g/t gold.
The company says the interpretation has highlighted potential for multiple stacked, plunging reefs.
“Receiving high grade results from reef structures within zones of gold bearing sulphide mineralisation is a key step to refining our mineral systems model of the project,” chairman James Chirnside said.
“Today’s results confirm our optimism surrounding the results from a potential stacked reef system at Growlers Hill and add a second prospective target zone within 500m at the Star of the West prospect.
“Importantly we are just getting started, with the Growlers Hill and Star of the West prospects being the first two targets drill tested, on a long list.”
A total of 799m of the planned 1630m of diamond drilling has been completed to date, with further assays expected in the coming weeks.
