In a major milestone late last week, Core Lithium (ASX:CSO) loaded its first direct shipping ore (DSO) for export to China – marking the company’s move from explorer to producer.
The first shipment of 15,000dmt of 1.4% Li2O DSO from the company’s Finnis Mine in the NT was successfully tendered using a digital exchange platform achieving a price of US$951/dmt.
Once loading is complete the Rossana ship will depart Darwin for Fangcheng, China.
“Core has made good progress during 2022 to transition from a mine developer to lithium producer,” CEO Gareth Manderson said.
“In 2023 we will continue this transition and the work required to build a quality operating business.”
Finniss is targeting an average 160ktpa of battery-grade lithium spodumene concentrate for at least 12 years, and Core has secured offtake for 80% of production for the first four years with lithium majors Ganfeng and Yahua.
It’s also a critical milestone for the renewable and critical minerals industry in Australia.
“Today’s milestone is a testament to the Northern Territory’s world class logistics chains and infrastructure networks, with a port that is the gateway to Asia,” Minister for Mining and Industry, Honourable Nicole Manison said.
“And the best part is it’s happening right here in the Northern Territory, meaning local workers, local suppliers and contractors will all benefit financially.”

GREEN CRITICAL MINERALS (ASX:GCM)
GCM says soil sampling has confirmed a 160km long rare earths trend at its North Barkly project in the NT which the company says points to an “immediate ionic clay (IAC) REE target”.
“GCM is pleased by these results as they confirm that the project has the potential for a very large ionic clay REE deposit at a shallow depth, most likely less than 30m,” it says.
“Such a deposit would be expected to be present as a blanket underlying the environs of the surface area rare earths trend.”
There is also a coincident and “unusually shallow” (100m deep) iron oxide copper gold (IOCG) target.
Iron oxide copper gold ore (IOCG) deposits, like BHP’s (ASX:BHP) Olympic Dam, can be tremendously large, simple-to-process concentrations of copper, gold and other economic minerals.
In 1995, BHP drilled close to this geochemical and geophysical target at North Barkly and encountered copper, lead and zinc anomalism including sulphides from 90m to 400m, GCM says.
“BHP did not assay the top 90m of the hole at all and none of it for rare earth elements,” it says.
“GCM considers this hole to be a near miss result.”
The explorer is planning to extend the soil sampling program early in the next dry season, which includes more detailed sampling over the modelled IOCG targets.
GCM then intends to drill the IOCG target, initially testing the laterite soil profile for clay hosted ionic rare earths, but also for deeper base metals and gold.
The Canadian lithium explorer will acquire the Gullwing-Tot Lakes property, ~5.5km from the Mavis Lake ‘Main Zone’ where the company has been successfully drilling since April 2022.
CRR says it is highly prospective for lithium mineralisation, with historical exploration identifying multiple spodumene-bearing pegmatites over the project area, with rock-chip samples returning grades up to 6.78% Li2O.
The Gullwing-Tot property will form an enlarged contiguous project area of 30km long and 9.5 km wide, with a total area of 22,984 hectares.
Exploration efforts will begin in the Canadian summer, focused principally on mapping and geochemical field work to develop and refine future drilling targets.
Heavy Rare Earths is living up to its name with exploration uncovering a large zone of rare earth mineralisation west of its Cowalinya South deposit in WA’s Norseman-Esperance region.
The new zone of mineralisation, which is over 2km wide, was identified by assay results of up to 6m grading 1,862 parts per million (ppm) total rare earth oxides (TREO) from a down-hole depth of 20m, 18m at 710ppm TREO from 22m and 10m at 640ppm TREO from 35m.
Importantly, the results from a 435 hole drill program at the project also included significant quantities of valuable magnet REEs, topping up at a solid 25.8% of the total rare earths intersected within hole AC200.
Added to that, the aircore drill program also identified other coherent zones of saprolite-hosted REE mineralisation up to 4.2km from the Cowalinya South deposit.
This includes a 600m wide zone of mineralisation that could represent part of an easterly/south-easterly extension to the Cowalinya South resource.
The emerging battery materials producer has extended a deal with Scandinavian mineral development company Critical Metals to finalise a new slag supply deal with Nordic steelmaker SSAB for the parties’ proposed vanadium recovery operation in Finland, to 28 February 2023.
Neometals is also progressing a 50% ownership and technology licensing deal for Critical’s wholly owned subsidiary, Recycling Industries Scandinavia – who’re in talks with SSAB to increase its 2Mt supply deal and secure first right of refusal on extra slag volume.
Neometals says the recovery operation would mean an opportunity to extract high-grade vanadium from slag without the need for a mining operation’s costs and carbon footprint.
The explorer has uncovered new rare earths and base metals targets during a historical review for follow-up at the Yarrambee project in WA – including 6m at 548 parts per million (ppm) Cerium oxide from 24m, and 16m at 332ppm Cerium oxide, from 20m
Plus, assays received for the 10 hole, 1663m RC program from drilling completed in October 2022 include 2m at 0.61% Copper from 81m, and 1m at 0.6% copper and 5.98 g/t silver from 46m.
An orientation soil sampling program of 18 lines for 360 samples to further investigate the Rare Earths, VMS, Gold and Nickel-Platnium Group Elements (PGE) targets will be undertaken in January 2023.
