Strong assay results from drilling at Heavy Rare Earth’s Cowalinya rare earths project has confirmed that mineralisation extends beyond existing resources.

The assays for the first 53 holes in the 421-hole program intersected thick sequences of REE mineralisation in saprolite along five exploration traverses with 21 drill intervals up to 22m thick with grades exceeding the project’s resource grade.

Notable assays are 5m at 1,258 parts per million (ppm) total rare earth oxides (TREO) with 26.6% magnet REOs from a down-hole depth of 16m including a top grade of 2,255ppm TREO across 2m from 18m (AC122) and 7m at 1,042ppm TREO (27.1% MREO) from 22m (AC115).

Heavy Rare Earths (ASX:HRE) added that the coherent zones of mineralisation intersected by the drilling are similar in nature and potential size to the existing Cowalinya deposit, which currently has an Inferred Resource of 28Mt at 625ppm TREO.

While this is an excellent result for the company, the assays received to date represent just 13% of the exploration and resource expansion drilling.

This presents the opportunity for further positive results especially since thicker saprolite was intersected to the west and south of the Cowalinya South deposit.

“We are very pleased with the results from drilling at our Cowalinya rare earth project,” executive director Richard Brescianini said.

“Despite having received assays from only 13% of the holes, we have already confirmed the presence of thick, saprolite-hosted rare earth mineralisation more than four kilometres away from our existing resource.

“The potential to grow our rare earth resource base at Cowalinya improves with every hole drilled.”

Drill results

The results were amongst the first 92 holes drilled in the current program along five north-south and east-west lines up to 4.2km long.

These drill lines were designed to explore for thick developments of clay-rich mineralised saprolite on the company’s E63/1972 tenement primarily to the south and southeast, but also immediately east and west of Cowalinya South.

REE-bearing saprolite was successfully intersected in all five drill lines (traverses) with thicknesses averaging 17.1m, which compares favourably with 17.7m for the Cowalinya resource.
