Gold Digger: These small ASX goldies nailed it in May; but don’t you… forget about silver
Mining
Mining
End of the week, and the month – were there any golden gains to be had in these Fedspeak-dominated times? At least 10 ASX small-caps gold stocks brought it in May.
But before we take a look at those, first, a bit of a gold price round-up and some analytical tidbits…
So then, that was a week, and a weak-ish Friday for the price of gold, which is continuing something of a bearish trend over the past seven days or so.
Join the club, say stocks, crypto and various other commodities and asset classes. No, not you, smug-looking US Dollar (+0.12%) and Treasury yields. You win this round.
Gold has slipped by about 3% over the past week, moving down to US$2,347 at the time of writing (from a recent high of more than $2,450), and $3,539 in Aussie dollars.
Why is it so? You’ll likely know the reason, but here it is anyway.
It’s largely due to the US Fed, innit – and its higher-interest-rates-for-longer vibe amid sticky inflation in the US. Not to mention in Europe and in Australia and elsewhere.
Minneapolis Federal Reserve president Neel Kashkari kicked markets in the guts midweek when he suggested that Fed officials haven’t completely taken the idea of hiking interest rates off the table. So that was fun.
But…
Zooming out then, and it’s very likely going to be just fine, if not very fine for the precious yellow one as we roll further into the year. Gold is still very much in an uptrend with YTD performance of +13% and up more than 20% over the past 12 months.
And according to FX Street techincal analysis guru Joaquin Monfort, “the precious metal’s medium and long-term trends are still bullish… suggesting the risk of a recovery remains high, yet price action is not supporting a resumption hypothesis at the moment.”
He adds:
“A decisive break back above the trendline, now at around $2,385, would be required to provide evidence of a recovery and reversal of the short-term downtrend. A decisive break would be one accompanied by a long green bullish candle or three green candles in a row.”
So, from what we’ve gleaned scouting about for further TA on this is that for a short-term bullish scenario the price action to watch out for are a breach back above the US$2,430 level and a hold above $2,450, which could signal a bullish reversal.
A more bearish short-term plotline, however, could see gold prices testing lower support at about US$2,325 and potentially drooping to about $2,260.
Props, by the way, to TradingView and its TA dark arts gurus for the analytical spitballing.
Australian Gold and Copper (ASX:AGC)
May gain: 500% (!)
An absolute stonking month it was for AGC – the clear golden gainz frontrunner in May. Earlier this month, AGC hit a 5m intersection at 16.9g/t gold, 1,473g/t silver and 15% lead+zinc as part of a drilling campaign.
Just the other day, too, the company announced firm commitments have been received for an $11 million placement at A$0.32 per share.
Funds will be applied towards the company’s portfolio of exploration assets including the South Cobar Project and for general working capital.
AGC is nicely cashed up, with $21m in the kitty on completion of this placement.
Forrestania Resources (ASX:FRS)
May gain: 155%
Gold, lithium and nickel hunter, Forrestania Resources (ASX:FRS), surged on news related to… iron ore, in the Yilgarn region, sending it triple-bagging on Tuesday, upwards about 200%.
The company announced it’s entered into an option agreement with shareholders of Netley Minerals to acquire 100% of issued shares in Netley, which is the holder of highly prospective iron ore tenements right next to Mineral Resources’ (ASX:MIN) Koolyanobbing operations.
It’s potentially big for FRS, that, which enters into a three-month option period, in which the company will drill test several iron ore targets identified by Netley and its advisors. The potential is there, with surveys and rock chip sampling correlating with the geophysical trends, indicating mineralisation potential. All else, including infrastructure – road, rail, port and service centres – lines up well.
(And yep, it’s still well into the precious yellow metal, with its flagship Forrestania project, and Eastern Goldfields operation in WA.)
May gain: 154%
The company made a big recent gold discovery at the Christmas Gift prospect within its 14 Mile Well Project in Western Australia.
That included high-grade gold-bearing quartz veinlets found during fieldwork. These veinlets have yielded impressive gold assays, with previous samples showing up to 18,207 grams per tonne of gold.
The company plans to commence a multi-hole diamond drilling program in the June quarter to further evaluate this promising find and test additional potential gold-bearing structures nearby.
May gain: 148%
Falcon is a first and foremost a Bendigo-focused goldie, but it’s been surging this week on mineral sands-related news.
Falcon this week received high-grade results for its 91-hole aircore (AC) drilling program at its Farrelly mineral sands prospect in Victoria, which is a follow-up on high-grade reconnaissance drilling results announced in early March.
Significant drill intercepts include: 26m at 8.9% THM (total heavy mineral concentrate) from 6m, with 15m at 12.9% THM from 13m; and 22m at 9.2% THM from 8m, including 12m at 15.1% THM from 16m as well as 3m at 20.3% THM from 21m.
May gain: 68%
This explorer rose on a “compelling new shallow copper drill target” identified at its Junction copper-gold prospect in Victoria, for imminent drilling.
“New interpretation shows that the east-west orientation of lode-style copper-gold-silver mineralisation at Junction provides an immediate discovery opportunity, drilling to commence as soon as a rig can be mobilised,” wrote the company mid month.
May gain: 64%
BMR reported significant progress at its Dittmer gold/copper project in May.
The company intersected high-grade gold from its Stage 4 drilling program, including a notable intersection of 0.3 meters at 193.45 g/t gold.
The company is preparing for a surface drilling program to explore further extensions and aims to test a substantial gold/copper geochemical anomaly spanning over 2 km of strike.
Among others, also crushing it:
Iltani Resources (ASX:ILT) +64%
AusQuest (ASX:AQD) +54%
Polymetals Resources (ASX:POL) +46%
Krakatoa Resources (ASX:KTA) +45%
Sprott, a prominent global investment manager that specialises in precious metals, has, in its latest podcast and other offerings, been reminding and highlighting the investment thesis for the second-most valuable precious metal – silver.
Sprott’s senior managing partner Ed Coyne had a long chat with MD Maria Smirnova about why the firm believes silver to be a good investment right now, and in fact, in general. This is some of what we gleaned from the conversation:
• Industrial demand: Silver is a critical component in various industries, especially in electronics and solar energy, driving up its demand.
• Clean energy transition: Silver’s role in renewable energy, particularly in solar panels, makes it crirical for the ongoing shift towards clean energy.
• Monetary metal: Like gold, silver has historically been used as money and remains a store of value, providing a hedge against inflation and economic instability.
• Market dynamics: Silver’s market is smaller compared to gold, which means it can experience more significant price movements, offering higher potential returns.
• Supply constraints: Mining production of silver has been declining, and with limited new sources coming online, supply constraints could further drive up prices.
• Investment diversity: Including silver in a diversified investment portfolio can, Sprott suggests, enhance overall returns and reduce risk due to its unique properties and market behaviour.
• Technological advancements: Emerging technologies such as 5G, electric vehicles, and battery storage systems are expected to increase silver demand significantly in the future.
• Undervalued asset: Currently, silver is perceived as undervalued compared to gold, presenting an opportunity for investors to buy at a lower price before a potential market correction.
Backing this up, Smirnova noted: “Silver is used in electric vehicles and vehicles in general. As we transition from internal combustion engines to electric vehicles and hybrids, the loadings of silver are increasing per vehicle.”
Coyne noted: “It’s interesting then, as demand continues to creep up, whether it’s solar or whether it’s industrial in general, the auto industry, and so forth, you got to believe that there’ll be a pinch point somewhere along the way.”
Smirnova: “Despite these continued supply-demand deficits in silver, one of the pushbacks has been on the ground inventories. Silver is held in London, the LBMA, the COMEX, and in Shanghai. In recent years, those above-ground inventories have been over a billion ounces.”
Another shot of Smirnova:
“Silver has always been a metal of two heads. Half of the demand is industrial, and the other half is investment and jewellery. Industrial demand has been gaining importance, now representing over half of the total demand for silver.”
Annnd… one more for the road…
“Silver use in solar alone could easily reach 300 million ounces by 2030. That’s 30% of the silver supply, which is a significant growth from where we are today,” said the Sprott MD.
