Gold Digger: The yellow metal picks up where it left off to start 2025

Gold capped an extraordinary year in 2024.
In fact, just nine years have recorded stronger annual gains, based on prices quoted by the London Bullion Markets Association.

And the early action has been more of the same, with gold storming 1.5% higher to over US$2660/oz today ($4284/oz) and silver closing in on US$30/oz again.
The latest steam for the gold price engine could well have come from China, where economic performance measures underwhelmed.
Gold is typically a hedge against macroeconomic headwinds, even if the US Fed’s interest rate cuts are less emphatic than previously hoped this year. Chair Jerome Powell guided that the US Fed was considered two cuts in 2025, rather than the four previously expected, after its meeting in December.
There’s a ~89% chance of a pause at the next meeting according to the CME Fedwatch Tool. But geopolitical uncertainty, including the trade war between the US and China, plus conflicts in Gaza and Ukraine, is likely to keep buyers keen on bullion.
“Despite the Fed’s cautious tone, sustained buying by central banks and geopolitical uncertainties are expected to keep gold in focus as a preferred safe haven asset,” Kotak Securities analyst Kanyat Chanwalla said in a note quoted by Bloomberg.

Top ASX gold stories
Chris Cairns-led Stavely generated plenty of excitement when it made a copper, gold and silver discovery a few years ago at the Cayley Lode, one of the first new finds in Victoria in years.
After posting an initial resource of 9.3Mt at 1.2% copper, 0.23g/t gold and 7g/t silver at Cayley in 2022 interest dried up somewhat as weak commodity prices and rough capital markets halted the company’s momentum.
But interest has returned in recent months and weeks on the back of a high-grade discovery in drilling at the Junction porphyry, which returned 14m at 3.24% copper and 34.5g/t silver in a hit from just 34m deep announced in late November.
Other intersections included 48m at 1.6% Cu and 14.8g/t Ag, 40m at 1.59% Cu and 13g/t Ag, as well as 20m at 2.16% Cu, 21.6g/t Ag and 20m at 2.48% Cu, 24.4g/t Ag.
They’re the first serious high-grade hits at Junction, an anomaly known about since 1979.
“This is an exciting time for our team as we put some of these recent breakthroughs and learnings to the test with the diamond drill rig,” Cairns said in November.
“A significant new discovery at Junction would clearly be transformational for the Stavely Project, where we have already defined a significant mineral resource at the Cayley Lode deposit.”
A rapid rise in the junior’s share price drew a speeding ticket from the ASX, with SVY saying it had no additional information to divulge aside from noting general market interest over upcoming assays from Junction.
Peregrine has been light on news in recent weeks, but its key figures have had plenty going on.
PGD is led by chair Brian Thomas, whose previous successes included a key role as non-exec chair at Azure Minerals ahead of the lithium explorer’s $1.7bn takeover by Gina Rinehart’s Hancock Prospecting and SQM.
He’s been in the news with another company Lycaon Resources (ASX:LYN), which brought former Azure MD and founder Tony Rovira on board as a non-exec director this week.
PGD counts Mark Creasy, Azure’s previous partner in the Andover lithium discovery, as one of its top shareholders and a former Creasy Group exploration manager George Merhi as its technical director.
Its tenements at the Newman gold project and further north at Mallina are especially interesting with activity heating up in the region.
Mallina is close to De Grey Mining’s (ASX:DEG) 10.5Moz Hemi discovery, which has made the DEG a $5bn target of Northern Star Resources (ASX:NST).
Newman, meanwhile, is close to the Paulsens mine, currently being redeveloped by Black Cat Syndicate (ASX:BC8) and Capricorn Metals’ (ASX:CMM) growing Karlawinda gold mine.
Creasy himself has also emerged as the likely owner of the Warrawoona mine after his decision to purchase Calidus Resources’ debt left the prospector extraordinaire in pole position to execute a DOCA to recapitalise the company’s assets.
Cygnus Gold rebranded as Cygnus Metals a couple years back when it moved over to Canada’s lithium scene.
But lithium prices are in a hole, and companies who piled in across 2022 and 2023 are now looking back at the old world metals of copper, gold and silver.
James Bay Minerals (ASX:JBY) ran higher after doing just that by acquiring the Independence gold project in Nevada last year.
Cygnus has executed something similar, completed the merger this week with TSX-listed Dore Copper.
The company has $14m to bankroll exploration at the Chibougamau copper and gold project.
The site hosts measured and indicated resources of 3.6Mt at 3% copper equivalent and inferred resources of 7.2Mt at 3.8% CuEq, with a 900,000tpa process facility already onsite.
It’s worth noting that resource is non-JORC, which means more work is needed to convert it to Australian standards.
That provides some low hanging fruit for the merged entity to lock in some early news flow.
