Geopolitical instability and trade war concerns fuelled a rise in gold prices on Friday, with lighter trading activity expected due to US markets being closed for the Thanksgiving holiday.
The uncertainty surrounding Trump’s tariff threats against Canada and Mexico also continues to bolster gold prices, as worries grow about the potential fallout from these two countries.
While the president-elect’s threats could all be a negotiating ploy to get countries to change their behaviour, the Produce Distribution Association – a Washington trade group – said earlier this week that tariffs will raise prices for fruit and vegetables, hurt US farmers and raise prices along the supply chain, causing consumers to pay more at the check-out line.
This is a real concern as Mexico and Canada are amongst the US’ top suppliers for fruit and vegetables. In 2022, Mexico supplied 51% of fresh fruit and 69% of fresh vegetables into the US, while Canada supplied 2% of fresh fruit and 20% of fresh vegetables.
In a survey of more than 120,000 voters, 7 in 10 said they were concerned about the cost of food before the election.
On the other hand, the inflationary impact of Trump’s tariff plans could also deter the US Federal Reserve from pursuing aggressive interest rate cuts, restraining the upward momentum in gold prices.

Stand-out ASX gold news on Friday
Auric Mining (ASX:AWJ)
Auric started processing ore from the Jeffrey’s Find gold mine near Norseman earlier this week, delivering the last 142,000t from the small operation to the Greenfields Mill in WA.
The campaign is expected to run for seven weeks with completion scheduled near the end of January 2025.
Greenfields will be conducting a weekly gold pour during the campaign with all gold to be refined and sold at The Perth Mint.
The joint venture is on target to complete 300,000t of ore at Greenfields Mill from Stage Two of the project.
Auric’s JV partner, BML Ventures, also has a contract with the Three Mile Hill Plant at Coolgardie to process up to 120,000t of ore, which would take the total mined at Jeffreys Find during Stage Two to 420,000t.
“All the ore going through the mill is high grade ore – we expect this campaign to produce the highest number of ounces for the year,” AWJ managing director Mark English said.
“BML have entirely switched their efforts onto getting the required amount of tonnes to the mill and haulage is taking place around the clock.
“With gold to be sold shortly it won’t be long before the first cash will be paid to Auric and cash disbursements will continue for us into the New Year.
“With a very solid gold price we couldn’t possibly be selling gold at a better time.”
Titan Minerals (ASX:TTM)
Copper-gold explorer and developer Titan is up on more high-grade gold hits from extensional areas within the Dynasty project in Ecuador.
New trench results include 2.1m at 32g/t gold and 7.4g/t silver from surface at Cerro Verde east and south, confirming the prospectivity of multiple targets highlighted by high grade rock chips, mapped veins and coincident soil geochemical anomalies.
The results provide ‘proof of concept’ over TTM’s new target areas, which are set to be tested as part of a 10,000m of exploration and resource growth drill drive currently underway.
Their shallow nature also bodes well for future development as it could translate into lower mining costs.
“It’s pleasing that trenching in new areas outside current resources has continued to deliver strong results, with the latest result of 2m at 31.96g/t gold and 7.38g/t silver returned from an extensional area ~ 40m along strike from inferred resources at Cerro Verde,” TTM CEO Melanie Leighton said.
“Gold mineralisation at Dynasty outcrops at surface, lending itself to trenching as a rapid and low-cost method for defining the width and tenor of mineralisation in areas.
“Additional trenches are being developed over priority areas, with a steady flow of results expected in the weeks ahead and several targets set to be tested as part of the ~ 10,000m drilling campaign currently underway at Dynasty.”
Three drill rigs are spinning at both the Cerro Verde and Iguana prospects, with several holes completed and samples sent to the laboratory.
The company is aiming to deliver a resource update in mid-2025 at Dynasty, which currently stands at 3.1Moz gold and 22Moz silver.
