Gold Digger: Retail gold and silver buyers paying monster premiums for coins due to high demand

The yellow metal is seeing plenty of resistance to recovery rallies in recent days after falling back to earth with a bang last week.
This has not impacted the strength of physical precious metals investment, which has been well documented over the past few years.
Retail investment in both gold and silver has either hit new peaks or held up at multi-year highs, says Metals Focus.
“Coin and bar purchases, especially in the US and Germany, have been exceptionally strong and, following a modest slowdown over the summer, have burst into life again,” it says.
“This reflects the recent price weakness and also the ratcheting up of hostilities in Ukraine.
“Overlaying both drivers are the ongoing twin concerns of inflation and the prospects of a global recession.”
Retail gold and silver customers are paying monster premiums
As a result of this demand, gold and silver retail investment markets have been characterised by extended delivery lead times and exceptionally high premiums.
“To illustrate, a 1oz Maple Leaf in the US can now command a 40% premium at the retail level, compared with around 10% pre-COVID (in January 2020),” Metals Focus says.
“For gold, a 1oz Eagle retails for roughly 11% in today’s market, compared with approximately 3% in early 2020.”
Then there’s the silver Eagle, which can attract an eye-watering 75% retail premium. In January 2020 this stood at “just” 12%, says Metals Focus.
And it’s not just Western markets paying through the nose.

The share prices of gold producers continue to suffer, with Newcrest Mining (ASX:NCM) (-4%), Northern Star (ASX:NST) (-5%), Evolution Mining (ASX:EVN) (-9%), Gold Road Resources (ASX:GOR) (-10%), and Capricorn Metals (ASX:CMM) (-11%) tumbling lower over the past week.
These five stocks are down between 14-48% over the past 12 months. The worst performing producer over this period is Ramelius Resources (ASX:RMS), down 60%. The best is GOR, down just 7%.
WEEKLY GOLD STANDOUTS

In September, the explorer unveiled a new 100,000oz gold, 3.6Moz silver resource at the Sihorbo South prospect, part of the Hutabargot Julu project in Indonesia.
While modest in size, this resource will be the first of many, SIH says.
“South Sihorbo is one of multiple gold-silver targets identified within this vein field that are considered by the Company to be under-drilled or had no previous scout drilling,” it says.
“This initial maiden resource announced for Sihorbo South is the first delivered in the greater Hutabargot Julu project area.
“The mineral resource inventory is expected to grow with additional exploration drilling.”
A new drilling program is currently being planned.
The small producer will soon be subsumed into the ambitious Genesis Minerals (ASX:GMD) which reached 74% ownership during the last quarter.
DCN, which fully transitioned from mined ore to processing of low-grade stockpiles from October 2022, produced 21,525 ounces for the September quarter.
It has about $44.2m in cash and gold by the end of September, and nominal debt of just $200,000.
Construction at TIE’s 3.45Moz Abujar gold project in Côte D’Ivoire remains on schedule and budget, the company said this week.
First gold pour is pencilled in for the current quarter, with Abujar forecast to produce 260,000oz gold in 2023.
The company – which has no debt – says it will deliver an update on Abujar’s life of mine production plan later this month “targeting a material increase to existing LOM production” using an updated mineral resource estimate, increased mill throughput, and higher gold prices.
The spot price is ~20% higher than the $US1,407/oz used in the DFS, it says.
