Gold Digger: Precious metal hangs in there after bearish week; Singapore shapes as gold market hub

Friday afternoon. Another weekend upon us. That’s gold. (And wet, if you’re in Sydney.)
Let’s make this relatively brief as we cover off some of the relevant weekly news, take a quick look at the latest ASX goldie performers and get on outta here.
As you will have probably noticed by now, the price of gold has dipped compared with this time last week, although that said it appears to be holding steady enough at levels of support.
Just a blip on the road to Sickgainzville? Probably. There are various topsy-turvy factors at play this week, which we’ll cover off for good measure…
• The price of gold in US dollars, at the time of writing, is trading at $2,307 and about $3,482 in the Aussie version.
• Good news for stocks and risk assets and, actually the likes of gold and silver, materialised in the week with tamer-than-expected inflation-related data churned out in the US with the latest CPI figures landing, giving rising hope to US interest rate cuts (plural) this year.
• But, the Fed… Although it held rates steady as expected, it then had to go and ruin the party with hawkish tonality, suggesting the job’s nowhere near done, yada yada, probably just one cut this year not the three you’ve all been frothing for, yada yada.
• The PPI, though… the Producer Price Index, also came in lower than market expectations, but the Fed’s short-term damaging words still linger.
• At least globally, interest rates are starting to fall, with the European Central Bank and the Bank of Canada both pulling out the shears lately due to easing inflation pressures in their respective economies.
The European Central Bank says that the euro’s role as a reserve currency has declined in favour of the dollar and the yen.
Of course, the ECB does not mention gold.
Gold has overtaken the euro in global international reserves.
Gold is coming for all paper currencies…

• News out of China, though, didn’t help matters much for gold this week, with its central bank, the People’s Bank of China, announcing it has paused its 18-month bullion buying spree. This seemed to drag the yellow metal down somewhat. That said, it’s not as if China has indicated it no longer has plans to buy gold – it simply held steady in May at 72.80 million troy ounces.
• How’s the TA? We’ll revert to an expert over at Kitco for that. Jim Wyckoff notes that: “Technically, August gold bulls have quickly lost their slight overall near-term technical advantage. A bear flag or bearish pennant pattern has formed on the daily bar chart. Bulls’ next upside price objective is to produce a close above solid resistance at last week’s high of $2,406.70.
“Bears’ next near-term downside price objective is pushing futures prices below solid technical support at $2,250.00.”
For now, then gold holds at and just above the June low technical support level of about US$2,304.
Right, what else is going on? Ah, yes – this…
The World Gold Council – an international body of ladies and gentlemen who happen to know a thing or two about the gold market, – has this week highlighted the fact that, along with the Singapore Bullion Market Association, it’s working “with local stakeholders” to develop Singapore as a global gold market hub.
This comes as some reassurance that, despite the news of China’s surprising gold-buying pause, Asia on the whole is still very much positioning as a dominant player in the global gold market.
“The rapid rise of Asia as the largest source of gold buying has moved the centre of gravity of the market, and this has created an opportunity for an international gold hub in Asia,” noted Chen Qinghan, Central Banks and Public Policy Lead at the WGC in an announcement late this week.
Per Kitco again: in an interview with CNBC, Shaokai Fan, head of Asia-Pacific and global head of central banks, said that Singapore is poised to become a future leader in the gold market as Asian central banks see a growing need for an official gold reserve center.
Fan sees a Singapore gold market rivalling other international hubs such as London and New York.
The Monetary Authority of Singapore is reportedly the sixth biggest gold buyer so far this year, some way behind Turkey, China India and Kazakhstan.
