Gold spent years fumbling around trying to hit the US$2000/oz on a consistent basis, only to smash through that mark last year amid the bombardment of Gaza, the ongoing war in Ukraine, trade tensions between the west and China and, eventually, the re-election of US President Donald Trump.
Now the magical climes of US$3000/oz, once merely a fever dream for hoping, waiting, wishing miners, is genuinely in sight.
The latest trigger came from the news Trump planned to enact 25% tariffs on goods coming out of Mexico and Canada, major allies and trading partners of the United States.
With fears gold imports could be covered in future executive orders, traders in the United States have been working overtime to buy bars and bring them to the country.
According to Bloomberg the Bank of England is facing weeks long queues for withdrawals as an unusually large US$5/oz arbitrage emerged between US and spot prices in the UK. Typically discounts are in the tens of cents.
Traders are concerned tariffs of the magnitude Trump has levied on Canadian, Mexican and Chinese goods, the latter to the tune of 10%, would supercharge the cost of bringing bullion to the States.
With that context ringing in their ears, UBS and Citi have joined the likes of Goldman Sachs, Argonaut, Shaw, Bell Potter and Commbank to tip when prices will hit US$3000/oz.
Citi calls
Based on premiums in the US market Citi’s analysts say the market sees a 20% chance gold will be included in blanket tariffs of 10%, but doesn’t see it occurring in the second quarter.
Yet it still thinks the gold bull market will run further.
“The gold bull market looks set to continue under Trump 2.0 with trade wars and geopolitical tensions reinforcing the reserve diversification/de-dollarization trend and supporting emerging market (EM) official sector gold demand,” US-based Citi analysts said in a note reported by gold trader Kitco.
Gold could hit the US$3000 mark within three months, after prices ran through the investment bank’s previous projection of US$2800 last week.
It already had a 6-12 month price target of US$3000, with a 2025 average of US$2900/oz now set.
While the US dollar typically shares an inverse relationship with gold, Citi thinks a higher US dollar will incentivise more central bank buying.
Those institutions have been key figures in the rise of bullion since 2022. Central bank purchases have topped 1000t in each of the past three years, helping gold to record demand of 4974t in 2024.

That accelerated in the fourth quarter, when 333t of net gold purchases were made by central banks, with China auspiciously returning to the market in November and December after a six month pause.
UBS meanwhile lifted its spot gold projection for 12 months from US$2850/oz to US$3000/oz.
“While we acknowledge the current spot price of $2870/oz is above our fair-value estimate, gold’s enduring appeal as a store of value and hedge against uncertainty has again proven itself,” Mark Haefele and fellow strategists said.
The LBMA’s spot gold price hit a record high on Wednesday of US$2871.55/oz before a blow off to US$2838.95/oz on Thursday.

This explorer ran a quite outrageous 260% higher on Friday alone after unlocking a treasure trove of high grade gold in aircore hits near Pinjin in WA’s Eastern Goldfields under cover, declaring a self-generated high grade gold discovery.
If it delivers a find of genuine size and scale it would be quite the journey for investors in Kalgoorlie Gold Mining, a spinoff of a spinoff having sprung from the bosom of Heron Resources offspring Ardea Resources (ASX:ARL).
Those hits included 17m at 4.81g/t Au from 48m, including 8m at 9.21g/t from 52m in a hoel ending in mineralisation and 4m at 4.72g/t Au in a separate gold from 52m also ending in mineralisation.
The Lighthorse prospect includes a 200m wide primary gold target, 600m of strike alongside the Laverton tectonic zone and 800m of cross cutting mineralised structures, with no outcrop and no effective historical drilling.
Follow-up RC drilling, which will penetrate deeper into the prospect, is due in March.
Tantalisingly, the prospect is 12km south of the Anglo Saxon gold mine run by Hawthorn Resources (ASX:HAW) and just 22km northwest of the acquisitive and cashed up Ramelius Resources’ (ASX:RMS) Rebecca, where a final investment decision is due this year.
“This is what we’ve been chasing at Pinjin. Our systematic approach to exploration has paid off. Thick, high-grade gold mineralisation at Lighthorse is located just 1 km west of our Kirgella Gift deposit, beneath transported cover in an area of zero outcrop,” KalGold MD Matt Painter said.
“This is a 100% KalGold generated discovery that reinforces the exceptional growth potential at Pinjin.”
In a similar vein, OzAurum surged twice this week on high grade gold intercepts from shallow aircore drilling at its Mulgabbie North gold project.
Mulgabbie North, which sits just 30km west of Lighthorse, delivered a new high grade gold discovery on Monday of 20m at 3.57g/t from surface and 10m at 6.59g/t from 12m among a string of other significant intercepts from drilling along the Relief Shear.
Those strikes are located around historical intercepts that were drilled but never followed up, with RC drilling last conducted over 38 years ago.
A RAB hole in 1998 by Gutnick Resources also intersected ‘significant mineralisation’.
The prospect is 1.3km south of previous OzAurum drilling and distinct from its existing 260,000oz resource, currently the subject of a study into a potential heap leach operation.
“This exciting new shallow high-grade gold discovery at Mulgabbie North validates our team’s exploration strategy and underscores the significant potential of this project located in one of Western Australia’s most prospective gold corridors,” OZM’s Andrew Pumphrey said.
“The multiple shallow, high-grade intercepts, starting from surface, are particularly promising. We’re especially pleased to have identified this new zone on the Relief Shear, just 1.3km south of previous drilling. This discovery, combined with historical results in the area, strengthens our belief that Mulgabbie North has the potential to host a substantial gold deposit.”
AC and RC drilling is being planned.
