Gold Digger: Gold flirts with US$2,000/oz, leaves everyone frustrated and wanting more

Gold was volatile in 2022 but in January and early February this year the only real way was up.

The latest US Fed decision to raise rates by just .25% was great news for stock markets, and also gold. Initially, at least.

“All things considered, I think there was enough there to conclude we’re almost at an end on tightening and market expectations of one more 25 basis point hike and maybe a couple of cuts later in the year look reasonable,” OANDA senior market analyst Craig Erlam says.

Gold was clearly buoyed by what the Fed and its chairman had to say, with the price rallying back above US$1,950 … before falling back below US1,915/oz on Friday.

Gold seems poised to consolidate around the $1900 level before it can make a run at the $2000 level, OANDA senior market analysts Ed Moya says.

“Bullion traders will need to see disinflation trends to remain strong and for the labor market to soften for the bull case to remain in place.”

VIKING MINES (ASX:VKA)

VKA has pivoted from gold into battery metals, but a successful legal claim in Ghana will see the explorer receive ~$4m from the purchasers of the Akoase gold project, who are liable to pay VKA the full royalty on 50,000oz of gold.

It has been a long process to get to this point, but the company has remained steadfast in the knowledge that the defendants were mining at the Akoase project and royalties were due, says VKA boss Julian Woodcock.

“The amount owed exceeds A$4M at the current USD exchange rate and, when received, will further bolster our strong cash position of A$3.83M at the end of the December quarter,” he says.

“We will be using the funds to rapidly advance the Canegrass battery minerals project which has exceptional potential to deliver significant returns for Viking’s shareholders.”

In late November, VKA inked a farm-in deal over the Canegrass vanadium project in WA, which has an existing resource of 79Mt at 0.64% V2O5.

 

COOPER METALS (ASX:CPM)

CPM’s flagship Mt Isa East project in QLD is ~10km from Carnaby Resources’ (ASX:CNB) company making Nil Desperandum IOCG discovery, part of the wider Greater Duchess project.

The CPM share price peaked at ~62c early 2022 on nearology, before deflating in the back end of the year.

Earlier this week, CNB announced an exceptional 39m at 5.2% copper, 0.5g/t gold at the Mount Hope prospect, which it calls “a significant new high grade copper gold discovery”.

It prompted a 31% spike in the CPM share price.

CPM is having reasonable success next door at Mt Isa’s King Solomon prospect, which was drilled three times in 2022.

Mineralisation has now been traced for around 650m along strike, with higher grades in three interpreted plunging shoots down to 170m deep.

Highlights from recent drilling include 17m @ 1.7% Cu and 0.38g/t Au from 49m, including 4m @ 6.2% Cu and 1.31g/t Au.

These shoots remain open at depth, the company says. It also has a bunch of targets yet to be tested adjacent to Mount Hope.
