German carmakers Mercedes-Benz Group and Volkwagen have signed landmark agreements with the Government of Canada to collaborate across all stages of the automotive chain from technical development and the extraction of raw materials to production, service life, and recycling.
Both companies have signed MoU’s promising to investigate different opportunities – Volkwagen and Canada will work together to promote e-mobility while Mercedez-Benz will explore opportunities for the sustainable source of raw materials.
As part of Mercedes-Benz’s ‘Ambition2039’, the focus is on the reduction of CO2 emissions as well as the responsible use of resources.
The automaker is preparing to go all-electric by the end of the decade, wherever market conditions allow and in close cooperation with its suppliers, the Stuttgart-based luxury carmaker is working on significantly reducing the amount of rare earth metals per electric drive.
A strategic partnership with Rock Tech Lithium Inc is being considered, which could allow it to supply Mercedez with lithium hydroxide to meet global demand for battery electric vehicles.
From 2026 onwards, as part of this envisaged partnership, Rock Tech intends to supply the auto-carmaker and its battery partners with up to 10,000 tonnes of lithium hydroxide annually, starting with a qualification period.
Volkswagen is hoping to to explore opportunities across Canada’s automotive and battery supply chain with its plan being to quickly build up highly standardised cell production capacities totalling 240 gigawatt hours per year in Europe alone.
In addition, there are plans to establish a dedicated gigafactory in North America and possible production sites are currently being examined.
PowerCo, the newly founded battery company of the Group, will drive forward the planned cooperation in the fields of battery value creation, raw materials supply chains and cathode material production in the North American region.

Who’s got news out?
RIVERSGOLD (ASX:RGL)
RGL has acquired a modestly sized 9.2sqkm of ground immediately to the east of Covalent Lithium’s globally significant Mt Holland lithium mine in WA.
Covalent is a joint venture between $55bn market cap Wesfarmers (ASX:WES) and major global lithium producer SQM.
Being right next door to one of the biggest lithium deposits in the world is exciting stuff, RGL CEO Julian Ford says.
“The new ground directly abuts Covalent Lithium’s Mt Holland Project, where they are actively developing their Earl Grey deposit which contains a resource of 189Mt at 1.5% lithium oxide (Li2O),” he says.
“We believe there is great potential for the Earl Grey and Bounty systems to continue into the E77/2784 tenement.”
CYGNUS GOLD (ASX:CY5)
Exploration is underway at the Pontax Lithium Project in Quebec with detailed airborne magnetics recently acquired and LiDAR about to kick off in what will be the first time the project has been explored since 2019 and the first time the area outside of Pontax Central has been explored for more than 10 years.
This will be followed by field mapping, in preparation for 10,000m drilling program in the coming quarter.
Pontax is within a world class lithium province which hosts major lithium projects including James Bay (40Mt at 1.4% Li2O), Whabouchi (56Mt at 1.4% Li2O ii) and Rose (34Mt at 0.9% Li2O).
All holes drilled to date have hit spodumene bearing lithium-caesium-tantalum (LCT) pegmatites with high-grade, shallow intersections including 9m at 1.7% Li2O from 46.9m, 15.6m at 1.6% Li2O from 83.9m, and 4.8m at 2.6% Li2O from 19.4m.
