Eye on Lithium: Ford slashes jobs to focus on US$50bn EV plans
Mining
The second largest US-based automaker and the fifth largest in the world, Ford, has cut 3,000 jobs in the hope to fund its US$50 billion-dollar electric vehicle plans.
A spokesperson told Bloomberg that while the cuts will come primarily in the US, some positions in Canada and India are also being slashed mainly within Ford’s operations that build traditional internal combustion engine vehicles.
This comes hot on the heels of its goal to bring 2 million electric vehicles into production each year by 2026 – a massive jump from the 64,000 announced last year.
In September 2021, Ford revealed the largest ever US investment in electric vehicle production at one time by any automotive manufacturer – a US$11.4 billion investment to create an EV factory in Tennessee and twin battery plants in Kentucky.
But more recently, the company announced a series of MoU investments with companies such as Rio Tinto (ASX:RIO), Liontown Resources (ASX:LTR), Ioneer (ASX:INR) and graphite miner Syrah Resources (ASX:SYR) in a bid to secure the materials it needs to fill its EV orders in the future.

61 lithium companies finished in the green, 52 fell flat and 18 ended the day in the red zone.
Biggest lithium winner today is AM7 with a huge 560% increase in resources totalling 287,000t of LCE at the Bitterwasser Lithium-in-Clay Project in Namibia.
The company says this is equivalent to a 1% lithium hard rock resource of 11.6Mt, with the resource identified within the first 12m from surface, open at depth and covering only one of the known 14 exposed clay pans in the area.
“These factors along with the potential for further pans obscured by mobile Kalahari dunes, have the potential to expand the Bitterwasser lithium resource substantially,” CEO Philip le Roux says.
“Additionally, the Cyclone Test Work and early tests around leachability of the ore using low cost lixiviants, suggests the potential of feeding a comparatively competitive leach plant with higher grade material.
“This will now be investigated through our association with the University of Stellenbosch in producing a bench-scale lithium carbonate product for battery grade use”.
LTR’s first pass ‘sighter’ metallurgical test work has wrapped up on drill core from the high-grade Salinas Lithium Project.
Results have returned high recoveries of 78.72% of lithium oxide and production of an extremely high-grade concentrate (up to 65.7%) from simple heavy liquid separation (HLS).
The ability to achieve such high recoveries using an uncomplicated liberation process at a relatively coarse crush eliminates the need for complex and costly floatation processing to produce a very high-quality, industry standard concentrate.
Importantly for Latin Resources (ASX:LRS), this could substantially reduce both capital costs and ongoing operational costs which could grant the Salinas project in Brazil very attractive economics.
“We are seeing lithium recovery rates and concentrate grades from simple HLS processing that are well above industry standards,” executive director Chris Gale says.
“This points to strong potential for production of a premium lithium product and therefore premium pricing for our product.”
Auric is planning a 220-hole aircore drilling program to test for Chalice gold mine analogues as well as other minerals including nickel, lithium, and rare earth elements at its Chalice West and Jeffrey Find Projects.
A drilling contract with Kalgoorlie-based drilling contractor, Kennedy Drilling, has been executed with a rig scheduled for a mid-October start date.
At the Chalice West area, the company says 85 holes will expand the extent of known greenstone units, including some with associated nickel-in-soils anomalism.
In addition, a hand-held XRF instrument will be used in the field to scan all samples for a range of elements that will include nickel and proxies for lithium and rare earth elements.
