Eye on Lithium: Bill Gates is building robot geologists

Bill Gates wants to create robot geologists to find lithium and other critical minerals needed to support our shift away from fossil fuels.
Canadian mining tech startup GeologicAI has received US$20m in a Series A funding round from the billionaire’s Breakthrough Energy Ventures (BEV) to build geologists powered by AI to analyse and interpret geological data in the search for orebodies.
GeologicAI aims to modernise the labour-intensive core logging process, where geologists have to manually enter interpreted data.
Its technology is purportedly capable of analysing rock samples and pinpointing mineralogy beneath the surface to a better degree than human mineralogists.
They say AI supported by multisensor machine vision (let’s just call keep calling them robots shall we) will be vital to achieving lower exploration costs while also being more environmentally friendly.
South American brine explorer Lithium Power International (ASX:LPI) has replied to an Australian Financial Review report that it was dealing with licensing issues at its Maricunga project in Chile.
LPI told to the market that “the standing of its concessions and permitting according to Chilean law is solid and there are not, nor have there ever been, judicial processes that have had the purpose of questioning the aptitude, rights and capacity to exploit Lithium from Mining Properties constituted prior to the year 1979.”

Here’s a few of today’s lithium movers and shakers with recent news.
First assays from maiden drilling at Andrada – part of VSR’s Ti Tree project in WA’s red hot Gascoyne region – have failed to hit the sweet spot.
But VSR believes the uneconomic grades encountered thus far “indicates Andrada may represent outer halo of larger mineralised system at depth”, the company says.
“[The] most prospective parts of Ti Tree [are] yet to be tested with 400+ pegmatites mapped, and 18 regional prospect areas identified,” it says.
“Deeper drilling [is] required to fully understand the potential.”
The remaining assays are due in two weeks.
Ti Tree sits around Delta Lithium (ASX:DLI) potentially monstrous Yinnetharra project, where the company recently hit 56m @ 1.12% lithium as part of an extensive multi-rig drill program.
(Former?) market sweetheart Solis bled out today, depsite hitting “shallow-dipping coarse spodumene rich pegmatites” in maiden drilling at the Jaguar project in Brazil.
The mineral spodumene, derived from pegmatite rock, is known for its high lithium content.
Hole one was a duster, thanks “incorrect drill orientation”, but spodumene-rich central core sections up to 20% were hit from 30m-38.2m in hole 2 and from 44.3m-52.2m in hole 3.
Drilling is ongoing, with a second rig being tendered to commence additional 5,000m program.
“Confirmation of an LCT (lithium-caesium-tantalum) bearing system that continues at depth below the artisanal workings is highly encouraging and we look forward to the arrival of a second drill rig,” SLM boss Matty Boyes says.
“As we extend our mapping and geochemical sampling programmes, we are finding evidence of a potential stacked pegmatite system.
“Multiple spodumene bearing float samples have been collected up to 1km from the central Jaguar artisanal mine area and large outcropping pegmatites, which are completely untested, have been located.”
Prior to Monday trade SLM was 1200% year-to-date after joining big brother and major shareholder Latin Resources Limited (ASX:LRS) in its Brazilian lithium hunt.
NYM has just bought five early-stage lithium projects in Canada across the highly-prospective lithium precincts of James Bay, NW Ontario and Abitibi regions.
It’s bought the tenements of Pontax East, Le Moyne, Walrus Island, Eades and Hailstone, which are a stone’s throw from established, heavier hitters like Patriot Battery Metals (ASX:PMT), Winsome Resources (ASX:WR1) , Power Metal (TSX-V:PWM), and Green Technology Metals (ASX:GT1).
NYM paid ~$800,000 in shares for the projects, packaged with options and royalties.
