Eye on Lithium: Biden moves to turbocharge EV sales, Australia still asleep at the wheel

All your lithium news, Thursday April 13.
The Biden administration plans to ensure two-thirds of new passenger cars and a quarter of new heavy trucks sold in the United States are all electric by 2032, marking a nearly tenfold increase on current EV sales.
The new ‘vehicle pollution standards’ outlined by the Environmental Protection Agency – believed to be among the strongest in the world – would set tailpipe emissions limits for cars made between 2027 through 2032 while nearly cutting 10 billion tons of CO2 emissions, twice the annual US emissions today.
Rather than setting a specific amount of annual EV sales for auto manufactures to make, the new rules would implement pollution standards across the board for cars and trucks, thereby forcing the auto industry to sell more EVs to meet the requirements.
Greenpeace senior campaigner Lindsay Soutar says the policy decision highlights how far behind Australia is when it comes to cleaner car technology.
“America is embracing a more rapid shift to electric vehicles to save drivers trillions of dollars, cut air pollution and create tens of thousands of new jobs,” she says.
“They are speeding past Australia with EV standards while we stuck paying for more fuel.”
Since Biden took office in January 2021, the private sector – including the American auto industry – has invested more than US$120bn in its electric vehicle and battery supply chain.
Meanwhile, the Albanese government released its National Electric Vehicle Strategy consultation paper in September last year, but the findings are yet to be released.

All up, a total of 44 companies finished in the green, 63 fell flat, and 41 tumbled into the red.
Mining studies at Red Dirt Metals’ Mt Ida lithium project continue to advance as it pursues an initial DSO (direct shipping ore) strategy with the commencement of mining in 2023.
“We have a granted mining lease with a long and recent history of mining, proximity to infrastructure in Western Australia, arguably the world’s best mining jurisdiction, five rigs in the field, thousands of samples in the lab and targeting approval to start mining this year,” RDT executive chairman David Flanagan says.
“The outlook for lithium is fantastic and with so many high grade and wide drill intercepts we see strong prospects for material resource extensions.”
Future Battery Minerals has hit a slam dunk on its maiden drilling program at its Nevada Lithium Project, hitting thick high-grade lithium claystones at its Western Flats and San Antone East prospects.
Hole WF23-011 struck 109.7m at 766ppm lithium from 135.6m deep including a 29m stretch at 1010ppm Li from 210.3m.
That’s not all, with hole WF23-006 hitting 44.2m at 570ppm Li from 169.2m and WF23-001 striking 35.1m at 463ppm Li from 106.7m downhole.
“The company is now keenly planning the Phase 2 RC drilling program, in conjunction with drilling the exciting new West Australian (WA) lithium discovery at Kangaroo Hills.”
High grade, thick results have been received from Danaya and the Northeast (NE) Domains at the Goulamina lithium project.
Hits such as 115.7m at 1.74% Li2O from 147.6m, 73.5m at 1.64% Li2O from 199.17m, and 71m at 2% Li2O from 18m were returned.
For now, drilling at Goulamina continues and is entering a new phase, with a focus on testing potential northern strike extensions.
Patriot Battery Metals says environmental surveys are planned for the remainder of the year and will provide important baseline data for the CV5 project impacts assessment.
Meanwhile, scheduling is underway for summer-fall field and desktop component activities including a Phase II hydrogeological program, geotechnical drilling and sampling, infrastructure site selection, condemnation drilling, and various environmental surveys.
Askari is carrying out two separate RC drilling campaigns at the Uis Lithium Project, in EPL 8535 and EPL 7345, which remain on track for completion in the June quarter.
The Phase-2 RC drilling campaign in EPL 7345 is set to include at least 4,000m of drilling, with ongoing mapping work being used to target the most prospective pegmatites.
Following completion of the project-wide detailed mapping and sampling at EPL 7345, the mapping and sampling crews will be mobilised to EPL 8535 where detailed mapping and sampling will also be completed across the entire project area.
Subject to shareholder approval, Xantippe’s board has accepted a convertible note from the Santos family who are already significant shareholders in the company as final payments for the Luz Maria Blocks in Argentina’s Catamarca province.
The board has worked hard to preserve cash vendor expenditure commitments and engage vendor participation in the future of the company, with Vendors also accepting shares in preference to cash consideration.
“The board would like to thank the Santos family for their continued support in the Company’s progress in Argentina,” XTC says.
