• Brazilian Critical Minerals signs MoU with Brazilian REE magnet manufacturer
  • Both parties will cooperate in the technological development of REE manufacturing processes
  • SENAI Regional Department’s Lab Fab expects to start producing REE magnets later this year

Special Report: Brazilian Critical Minerals has reached an agreement with the SENAI Regional Department of Minas Gerais, Brazil, to jointly research and produce rare earths magnets.

The non-binding, five-year memorandum of understanding establishes the basis for cooperation between the company and the SENAI Regional Department to cooperate in the technological development of rare earth magnet manufacturing processes.

This includes a view to jointly develop research, development and innovation for the demonstrative production of rare earth magnets at SENAI’s Lab Fab permanent magnet facility in Lagoa Santa.

Areas of mutual interest include arrangements for the supply of raw materials from Brazilian Critical Minerals (ASX:BCM) for conducting pilot production of REE magnets and taking actions to reinforce the relationships between participants and industries that are interested in REE magnet technologies.

The two parties will also develop joint research projects that focus on applied research, evaluation activities, experiments, training, consultancy, and specialised technological services as well as implement joint activities such as pilot and experimental initiatives in areas of mutual interest.

“SENAI is a leader in developing technology and innovation within Brazil and we are excited to be partnering with them on these studies and pilot project to further advance our rare earth permanent magnet production ambitions,” BCM managing director Andrew Reid said.

“This MoU reinforces the irreplaceable role that rare earth permanent magnets have in the application of high-performance machines around the world with the current supply forecast to double by 2040.

“BCM is proud to be engaging with a locally developed technology in Brazil with a commitment to assist with the accelerated development of permanent magnets.”

Brazilian REE magnets

Lab Fab is a permanent magnet technology developer that aims to advance the REE industrial chain in Brazil and produce a range of high-end technology products suited for a range of electric motor industries requiring REE magnets.

It is developing the first permanent magnet manufacturing facility in Latin America that is expected to start operation later this year with plans to grow REE magnet production to 200tpa.

BCM’s Ema ionic adsorption clay project in Brazil covers 781km2 and has an inferred resource of 1.02Bt grading 793 parts per million total rare earth oxides.

Recent testing had opened a path to in-situ leaching after demonstrating that Ema mineralisation has a strong and rapid response to water permeability field trials.
