Besra will now look at finalising construction plans for a pilot processing plant at Jugan after environmental approvals with “no exceptional conditions” were received for the project.

Asian gold explorer Besra Gold’s (ASX:BEZ) proposed pilot gold mining at its Jugan project has had its environmental impact assessment (EIA) approved by Malaysia’s Natural Resources and Environment Board.

Jugan is the most advanced prospect within Besra’s Bau Gold Field corridor, measured and indicated of 870,000 ounces of gold at 1.5 grams per tonne (g/t) plus inferred resource of 90,000 ounces of gold (oz) at 1.6 grams per tonne (g/t) and an additional exploration target of 2-3.2 million ounces (moz) at between 1.8 and 2.5g/t.

The total Bau gold field contains a JORC 2012 compliant resource including 3.4Mt at 1.5g/t for 166,900oz in measured resources, 16.4Mt at 1.6g/t for 824,000oz in indicated ounces and 47.9Mt at 1.3g/t for 1.99Moz in inferred resources.

Pilot plant development

Besra said that EIA approvals are often long-lead items and getting it over the line for Jugan is a major milestone towards being able to start construction work.

The EIA – which notably has no exceptional conditions attached to it – will now be lodged with Malaysia’s Ministry of Natural Resources and Urban Development.

While awaiting that formal approval, Besra will continue preliminary activities for the pilot plant, including sterilisation drilling and finalising design work.

“To ensure the build and commissioning of the operation meets the December 2023 schedule, arrangements are currently being advanced for the engagement of civil engineering and fabrication contractors,” the company stated.

“The pilot plant will have an initial nominal throughput capacity of 50 tonnes per day (tpd), although it can be expanded to 400tpd.

“This throughput range will ensure, as far as possible, valid commercial scalability of the processing results which will be incorporated into the final feasibility study for Jugan.”
