ASX newcomer Besra is preparing to start initial drilling designed to test extensions to the Pejiru deposit within its Bau gold project in East Malaysia.

The drill program will also seek to upgrade the classification and size of the Pejiru inferred resource, which currently stands at 970,000oz at a grade of 1.2 grams per tonne (g/t) gold.

Besra Gold (ASX:BEZ) intends to start within the next two to four weeks, a 3,000m drill program to test the depth extent where previous drillholes terminated within high-grade mineralisation.

Historical intersections include 32m at 11.4g/t gold, 55m at 2.3g/t gold and 11m at 12.13g/t gold within 81m at 3.26g/t gold.

The company noted that the Pejiru resource currently extends for a strike of 1.5km with widths of between 100m to 150m.

This remains open both along strike and at depth.

Proposed infill and step-out drilling is intended to better define the extent of mineralisation as well as allow upgrading of the resource classification to enable their support in future feasibility studies.

Comprehensive geophysical coverage correlated to historical drill results and surface mapping has led to the identification of 16 potential sub-vertical feeder systems within the Pejiru sector.

Bau gold field

The broader Bau gold project shares many geological attributes as the rich Carlin trend in Nevada.

It currently has a resource of 73.6 million tonnes grading 1.43g/t gold, or 3.3Moz of contained gold in multiple deposits.

There is also room to grow with the company outlining a conceptual exploration target of between 4.89Moz and 9.27Moz at grades of between 1.7g/t and 2.5g/t gold.

Besides the upcoming drilling at Pejiru, Besra also intends to drill other brownfields targets such as Jugan, Bekajang and Sirenggok.

Drilling at Jugan will target increasing grades at depth along the northwesterly plunging zone of mineralisation while similar brownfields style drilling evaluation is planned at Bekajang and Sirenggok where the extents of existing mineralisation have yet to be fully delineated.
