The month of December signals the start of the festive season, which also gives rise to an opportunity for workers to let their hair down at the beloved tradition known as the “office Christmas party”.

As a general rule, most workplace Christmas shows produce a best-on-ground performance — that one co-worker who goes above and beyond and (most likely) lives to regret it the next day.

So from the Stockhead editorial team to our readers, we hope you made it through the week unscathed.

Here are this week’s ASX Small Cap Winners & Losers:

ASX SMALL CAP WINNERS

MRG Metals (ASX:MRQ) +73%

The explorer had a good week, climbing by 9 per cent on Monday after releasing lab results from the first line of aircore drilling at Koka Massava, its fully owned mineral sands project in Mozambique.

Results showed high grades up to 17.64 per cent of total heavy minerals (THM) near-surface, which the company said demonstrates “the robust nature of the mineralisation”.

The stock then surged by 41.67 per cent on Wednesday, prompting a please-explain from the ASX. MRG said it wasn’t aware of any information which could have caused the surge.

The company followed up with another update on Friday, announcing plans to extend the drilling footprint at Koka Massava as it looks to prove up a mineral sands resource at the site in 2020.

Aeon Metals (ASX:AML) +70%

Shares in Aeon rose sharply on Tuesday after the company provided a market update on Walford Creek, its flagship copper-cobalt project in north Queensland.

Aeon announced an updated resource for the project, which it said “substantially increased” the expected resource tonnage.

The company also said the results comfortably underpinned all the assumptions in its October production outlook, which targeted a 3.5-million-tonne-per-annum open-pit and underground mining operation.

ASX SMALL CAP LOSERS

Pharmaxis (ASX:PXS) -44%

The biotech stock was among the worst performers this week after getting some bad news out of Germany, where its research partner Boehringer Ingelheim pulled the pin on further development of Pharmaxis’ drug treatment for NASH (non‐alcoholic fatty liver disease).

The company began the week by going into a trading halt and announcing some big news from its German partner, although it wouldn’t say whether that news was good or bad.

On Wednesday, the news turned out to be bad, as Pharmaxis announced that Boehringer was proceeding with the “discontinuation of the development of BI 1467335 for the treatment of NASH”.

CEO Gary Phillips said he was disappointed with the result, and was now looking forward to “further scientific discussion when the full data and analysis from this phase IIa clinical trial are available for review”.
