Weekly ASX small cap wrap: Scientists discover metal-eating bacteria

Scientists have accidentally discovered type of bacteria that eats metal.
Microbiologists from the world-leading California Institute of Technology (Caltech) found the bacteria after performing unrelated experiments using a chalk-like type of manganese, a commonly found chemical element.
Caltech professor of environmental microbiology Dr Jared Leadbetter says that these are the first bacteria found to use manganese as their source of fuel.
“A wonderful aspect of microbes in nature is that they can metabolise seemingly unlikely materials, like metals, yielding energy useful to the cell.”

Shares in Pointerra have more than doubled after billionaire tech investor Bevan Slattery made a $2.5m investment through a placement of shares priced at 5c each.
Pointerra’s core product offering is a cloud-based platform which allows 3D geospatial images that removes the need for high-performance computers to process huge amounts of data.
