Among the winner, there were some early gains among the penny-stock minnows trading below one cent per share, but there was no clear standout to start the day.

Metal City (ASX: MCT) rejoined the boards after going into a trading halt for a recent share placement. The stock fell more than 20 percent to 0.7 cents — equal to the price point at which the company raised capital.
