The day ahead

The All Ordinaries index hovered just above 7,000 points at the market’s close on Thursday, with an on-day gain of 8 points to 7,022.

The broad index of Australian shares has been trading in a narrow range of 6,800 to 7,200 points since early December 2020.

Australian government 10-year bonds were yielding 1.69 per cent Thursday, down from their two-year high of 1.79 per cent a week ago.

Lower yields could make investing in equity markets more attractive.

More government spending could be on the way for the US economy with President Joe Biden talking about a $US3 trillion infrastructure splurge.

This would be on top of the US Congress’ vote for a $US1.9 billion COVID-19 economic recovery package only two weeks ago.
