Rise and Shine: What you need to know before the ASX opens

The day ahead

Australia will get its quarterly economic scorecard with the release of Q1 GDP figures (11:30am EST). The median forecast is for a contraction of 0.3 per cent, as the initial impact of COVID-19 dragged on activity in March.

There’s also dwelling approvals data for April (it will be ugly) and Ai Group’s PCI construction index for May (it will also be ugly).

Those are all historical economic data points though, while stock markets remain more bullish (for now) on the future outlook.

Looking abroad, markets will be watching out for US ADP employment numbers — a precursor to May jobs data the end of the week.

There’s also a few important US economic indicators that may affect sentiment; the ISM non-manufacturing index (May) along with factory orders and durable goods orders (April).
