The day ahead
Australian markets will get the headline datapoint of the week with the release of inflation figures for the March quarter.
Westpac expects to see quarterly inflation growth of just 0.1 per cent, weighed down by the effect of the January bushfires and falling petrol prices in the wake of COVID-19.
The subdued picture for inflation is consistent with “weak wages growth, patchy consumer spending, and softness in housing inflation,” Westpac said.
On global markets, all eyes will be on the US Federal Reserve when the bank makes its policy announcement overnight.
Markets will be watching for clues as to the Fed’s outlook, after a record month of monetary policy stimulus shelters the US economy from the COVID-19 fallout.
