Good morning everyone, and welcome to August 13, 2024 – an important date in the history of plundering and destroying ancient civilisations.

It was on this day in 1521 that Spanish conquistador Hernán Cortés captured Tenochtitlán (now known as Mexico City) after a 93-day siege. This effectively ended the Aztec empire and procured Mexico for the crown of Spain.

Cortés was said to have had an army of 530 or so crossbow-wielding, muzzle-loaded musket-toting, sex-deprived and smallpox-riddled Europeans frothing for some good old fashioned xenophobia-fuelled extreme violence.

At the risk of generalising, probably not the sort of blokes you’d want to share a bottle of tequila with or let your family or farm animals anywhere near.

And if these men weren’t already enough on edge, legend has it that Cortés burnt their ships down to help motivate them to succeed in the “new land”. Guess the stirring TED talk he delivered the evening before just didn’t cut it.
