High flying punting company PointsBet (ASX:PBH) has signed on Shaquille O’Neal as a brand ambassador.

PointsBet has never looked back since listing on the ASX in June 2019 at $2 per share. It is now nearly $16 per share as it continues a US roll out.

The company also has a presence in Australia and is looking to expand its horizons beyond its current niche of sports betting.

O’Neal is one of the most famous and successful NBA players of all time, having won 4 NBA championships and been an NBA All Star on 15 occasions during his 19 year career. Since retirement he has been in various ventures from acting to professional wrestling.

Now O’Neal will be a brand advocate of PointsBet as well as an investor — part of his consideration will be paid in shares.

O’Neal’s other investments include a 1999 investment in Google shares as well as several fast-food franchises.

Shaq “our clear number one pick”

PointsBet Co-Founder Andrew Fahey said the recruitment of O’Neal “underscores the alignment and trust across our teams and our shared belief in the opportunities ahead for PointsBet.”

“Shaq is an iconic figure in the worlds of sports and entertainment and our clear number one pick to represent the PointsBet brand in Australia,” he said.

“U.S. sports, particularly professional basketball, continue to be the fastest-growing betting sport in Australia and we are very excited to align with such a transcendent athlete.”

This morning’s announcement also contained comment from O’Neal himself.

“The rise of responsible sports betting is really exciting and I am so excited to join forces with PointsBet, the best-in-class partner in Australia when it comes to online sportsbooks,” he said.
