Local markets have drifted into a state of tentative calm into midday trade, following yesterday’s historic selloff.
The chaos sparked by the oil market collapse extended into global markets, as the US S&P500 went into a 15-minute trading halt after falling by more than 7 per cent.
When the ASX opened this morning, the return of volatility — a word rarely used in the decade-long bull run — was in full effect.
Local stocks initially crashed by another 4 per cent, before an equally sharp rally which saw the ASX200 reach 5,737.70 points in midday trade — a gain of 0.35 per cent.
The Small Ords index fared better, posting a gain of 1.1 per cent to 2,469.40 points. The turnaround followed the first indications by the Trump administration that it plans to enact a fiscal policy response which will include cuts to payroll tax.
A short time ago, US stock futures were 3 per cent higher, in what looks like some respite from a historic market crash that’s now stretching into its third week.
The number of confirmed COVID-19 cases climbed to 650 in the US overnight, which is the same number that Italy had three weeks ago…

The medical tech company brushed off the dire macroeconomic situation with some big news out of the UK.
