The Basketball World Cup may have just ended, but it’s about to heat right up at home in Australia, with the WNBL being launched today.
It is the 40th anniversary of the first season, and to mark it, our politicians played a scratch game against some superstars, including three-time WNBA MVP Lauren Jackson.
The news is better at the smaller end of the market today: the ASX Small Ords has gained 0.38 per cent to 2,891 points, while the ASX 200 has fallen 0.05 per cent to 6,692 points.
Westpac today released its leading index, signalling below-trend growth in Australia. “The six-month annualised growth rate in our index, which indicates the likely pace of economic activity relative to trend three to nine months into the future, fell from +0.01 per cent in July to –0.35 per cent in August,” the bank said.

Two biotech companies are among the biggest gainers today. Topping the list is Antisense Therapeutics (ASX:ANP), which reported early positive data for its drug ATL1102, for the treatment of duchenne muscular dystrophy. Shares rocketed 85 per cent to 9c. The phase II trial is ongoing.
Cynata Therapeutics (ASX:CYP) was the other to make big moves, jumping 20 per cent by lunch to $1.70, after its Japanese investor Fujifilm finally executed a licence option agreement.
