Sometimes, things just don’t go to plan.

For investors, that can mean cutting your losses when a promising small-cap issues a series of earnings downgrades.

And for the US Democrat Party, it can mean an all-out media firestorm after an app-glitch caused major delays in the Iowa caucuses.

As the first contest in the Democrat primaries, the Iowa vote is often viewed as an important guide for which candidate will win the nomination to take on President Donald Trump in the US election this November.

Almost a day later, it’s still not clear which candidate won the vote. But with about two-thirds counted, surprise contender Pete Buttigieg holds a slim lead over Bernie Sanders.

The Democrat Party itself conceded that its bumbling start to the nomination proceedings had been less than ideal.

And perhaps not surprisingly, Trump jumped at the chance to rub it in — unloading on his rivals via a series of tweets like this:

Things weren’t quite so chaotic on local markets this morning. The ASX200 was up 0.55 per cent to 6,987 points into midday trade, while the Small Ords rose 0.75 per cent to 2,993 points.

Elixir Energy (ASX:EXR)

The energy explorer was a standout in morning trade after a positive drilling update at its coal-seam-gas project in Mongolia.

Drilling at Elixir’s Nomgon-1 well intersected 82m of net coal and the thickest coal seam was 51m. The results showed “visible coal quality is highly encouraging for gas content and permeability”, Elixir said.

Shares in the company fell 45 per cent in January after another update left markets disappointed, but the share price more than doubled in the wake of this morning’s announcement.
