Lunchtime ASX small cap wrap: Who’s getting back on the horse today?
News
The ASX continued its Jekyll & Hyde act in the morning session, as stocks climbed by almost 4 per cent into midday trade before easing back.
The gains put the local index on track for its fourth straight day of see-saw price action, after a 2 per cent drop yesterday which was preceded by a 7 per cent surge on Monday.
Meanwhile, various Australian states have taken it upon themselves to introduce new containment measures as the number of positive COVID-19 tests moves past 2,000.
People in NSW without a reasonable excuse to be outside could face up to six months jail or fines of $11,000. Eight fines for failure to obey social distancing rules have already been issued in Victoria, where Premier Daniel Andrews instructed citizens to stay home unless it was absolutely necessary to leave.
Over in the US, Donald Trump has warned of a “painful” two weeks ahead as health authorities project the number of COVID-19 related deaths in the country will reach 100,000 (Australia’s death toll is 20).
A short time ago, the ASX200 was 2.3 per cent higher at 5,194 points. The ASX Small Ords Index was up by 1.36 per cent at 2,133.50 points.
