It’s been a case of another day, another brutal selloff for ASX investors as markets remained in the throes of a coronavirus-induced panic.

The local index is on track for its third straight fall of well over 1 per cent after global stocks got smashed again overnight.

The S&P500 was actually pointing higher at the conclusion of Asian trade yesterday. But the good news didn’t last long, and US markets got mauled into the close after a dire health warning from the Center for Disease Control and Prevention.

With new cases popping up across multiple regions, analysts are in the process of revising their 2020 forecasts for global economic growth sharply lower.

Local markets started badly and couldn’t arrest the damage into midday trade, as the ASX200 slumped by 1.96 per cent to 6,732 points. The risk-off mood sparked heavier falls on the Small Ords index, which fell 2.37 per cent to 2,882 points.

Both indexes have now lost around 6 per cent this week.

The junior gold explorer had some more good news out of its Hemi project in WA, after confirming the discovery of larger sulphide zones underneath existing high-grade gold zones.

The large sulphide zones “have the potential to significantly increase Hemi’s scale”, technical director Andy Beckwith said.
