Closing Bell: Market slips, but Materials up 1.23%

The ASX 200 index closed near its lows Thursday, falling by 0.26% on lower-than-normal volume.
Nine out of 11 sectors were lower, led by Health Care, which lost 1.44%.
The Materials sector – which includes chemicals and plastics, construction materials, wood products and metals and minerals — was a standout, gaining 1.23%.
4.2bn shares were traded on Thursday worth an above average $7.5bn. 669 stocks rose, 720 fell & 417 finished unchanged.

Biotech Alterity Therapeutics (ASX:ATH) gained on positive study results, while digital wealth advisory platform InvestSMART Group (ASX:INV) gained on a positive business update.
