ASX Small Cap Lunch Wrap: Who’s watching it like a hawk today?

With spring about to get underway, Aussie authorities are staying vigilant against the lingering corona threat.
NSW health experts are still monitoring mini ‘spot fires’ linked to various city buildings, gyms and bus routes. But so far the state is holding the line, with just four new cases linked to known clusters overnight.
It’s been a long winter in Victoria, where daily case numbers (75) fell to their lowest level since July 3, while Queensland is monitoring a prison outbreak where one new case was reported overnight.
Over on markets, the ASX opened flat before picking up steam with steady gains recorded for both the ASX200 and the Emerging Companies Index.
The price action precedes a big week of data and events to start a new month, which will be led by tomorrow’s RBA policy announcement (2:30pm EST).
Aside from stocks, gold recovered some momentum to push back towards $US2,000 an ounce while the Aussie dollar was probably the talk of markets to start the week.
In the wake of US Fed Chair Jerome Powell’s speech last Thursday, the “battler” has broken out to new two-year highs just shy of US74c.

Among the leaders, GWR Group (ASX:GWR) followed up Friday’s gain of more than 70 per cent with another strong rally this morning.
The gains follow news that the company has received mining approval from the WA government to proceed with its iron ore project at Wiluna West.
“Expressions of interest from potential mining, crushing and trucking contractors have been received,” GWR said.
And amid another spate of full-year earnings announcements, 8Common (ASX:8CO) got investor approval which saw the stock rise more than 20 per cent in morning trade.
The fintech company said it processed around $2.5bn of transactions in the 2020 financial year, and booked recurring subscription revenue of $2.6m — a gain of 30 per cent.
