ASX Small Cap Lunch Wrap: Who’s sh..ting their dacks today?

Thanks to drones, we now know that people-shark encounters are alarmingly common.

At 1:40 of this clip, three kids playing on body boards don’t realise there is a shark checking them out just metres away.

At 9:25, Dad (pictured above) wishes he bought a bigger boat.

People often don’t even realise when there are sharks around them, drone footage shows, and much of the time the sharks don’t seem to pay humans much attention either.

Which is the good news. This researcher has studied hundreds of interactions between people and young white sharks, and his initial analysis is simple:

“It looks like so far; the sharks don’t care. They treat people as if they’re flotsam, just floating debris on the surface.”

To Markets

US stocks pushed to a fresh record high overnight.

The S&P500 ended the session up 0.26% — closing more than 100% higher than its pandemic lows of March 2020.

And yet sentiment last night was certainly not categorically bullish, says IG analyst Kyle Rodda.

“The NASDAQ dropped, and cyclicals were mixed, with another drop in oil prices weighing on the energy sector,” he says.

“But this market remains one where the key consideration is where you put your money in the stock market, and not if you do, with defensive stocks climbing on a touch of caution about the growth and monetary policy outlook.”

It’s a tough day on the local bourse. At 12pm eastern time the benchmark ASX 200 index was down 0.77% to 7,523.5 points, with banks and miners weighing the most.
