Democrat candidate Joe Biden now looks in the box seat to win the US presidential election.

Among key battleground states, Pennsylvania is still live and election officials said the full count may be days away.

Officials in Nevada have delayed the full announcement of vote results until tomorrow (4am Sydney time).

On local betting markets, gambling site Sportsbet has paid out on a Biden win. But this is America, so we can’t rule out some more wild u-turns.

Trump has lawyered up, and his legal team (led by former New York mayor Rudy Giuliani) has already slapped lawsuits on three states — largely based around an alleged lack of Republican oversight at voting ballots.

The race for the 100-seat Senate is on a knife edge, with Republicans leading 48-47 with five races remaining.

The Republicans lead three of those, and there will be a run-off in Georgia (not until January) which the Republicans are also favoured in.

So, what’s the outlook for small caps with a Biden presidency and a Republican-controlled Senate? More on that here.

For now, ASX markets are pretty calm about the whole thing.

There were steady gains on all the local indexes in morning trade, following a buoyant session on Wall Street overnight as traders assessed the probability of a clear Democrat victory.

Bitcoin is up and about — >$US14,000 and counting – while gold is holding steady above $US1,900 an ounce.

Engineering firm Synertec (ASX:SOP) led small cap gains on some positive China news.

The stock doubled this morning after SOP provided a positive update on its oil waste recycling technology, as part of a trial program with Chinese company Sichuan Greentech.

“The trial results of the CDP pilot programs to data indicate that it is a potentially revolutionary and globally applicable solution to the significant environmental challenges presented by toxic drilling mud,” managing director Michael Carroll said.
