Oscar winning director Danny Boyle is turning his hand to a dance adaption of The Matrix. No joke.

It won’t be the first dance project for the director of Slumdog Millionaire and Trainspotting, who directed the Olympic Games opening ceremony in 2012 where he managed to almost reunite the Spice Girls and convince the late Queen Liz to do a James Bond skit with Daniel Craig.

The Matrix project is set to debut next October at Factory International, a new arts venue in Manchester, UK and apparently will combine “hip-hop choreography of hundreds of dancers with the latest immersive design” and will “take audiences on a thrilling journey through ‘The Matrix’ and into a new realm of possibilities.”

Talking about new possibilities, we couldn’t not quickly mention this piece of ingenuity.

A Florida reporter has used a condom to protect her microphone during Hurricane Ian – and her logic totally makes sense.

TO MARKETS

The ASX 200 is trading down 0.52% at lunch today, with nine out of 11 sectors in the red. IT and Consumer Discretionary are leading the laggards, down 2.10% and 1.86% respectively.

The Aussie dollar firmed from lows near US64.35 cents to highs near US65.01 cents and was near US64.95 cents at the US close yesterday.

The Reserve Bank releases credit (lending) and monetary aggregates data today and CBA associate economist Harry Ottley says business credit is still growing.

“Private sector credit may have lifted by 0.6% in August, a slower pace of growth than in July,” he said.

“Growth in the stock of housing credit has softened, driven by weakness in owner-occupiers and that is likely to continue to be the case.

“Business credit has remained the strongest source of credit growth.”

NOT THE ASX

UK Prime Minister Liz Truss rattled investors with comments Thursday that she wouldn’t backtrack on plans to carry out big tax cuts and spending increases funded by borrowing, even amid the turmoil in global financial markets.

“We had to take decisive action,” Truss told the BBBC in her first public comments since the tax plan was presented last Friday.

Economic data in the US on Thursday underscored concerns about the economic outlook.

The Commerce Department said the US economy shrank at an annual rate of 0.6% in the second quarter, confirming previous estimates.

Mortgage rates rose to their highest level since 2007, a jump that will lock some would-be buyers out of homeownership and force others to spend far more than they were planning.

Even good news wasn’t, really. Initial jobless claims, a proxy for layoffs, decreased to their lowest level since April, the Labor Department reported Thursday.

But in the sometimes perverse logic of Wall Street, some investors said that was sending markets down too: A strong jobs sector could give the Federal Reserve more confidence to keep aggressively raising rates.

“The Fed is trying very hard to inflict pain on the job market and it’s not working. That maintains the narrative that the Fed is going to have to be tighter for longer,” said David Waddell, CEO & chief investment strategist at Waddell and Associates

In the lead today was Alchemy Resources (ASX:ALY) was drawn first in a ballot for a new tenement tenure along strike of Global Lithium Resources’ (ASX:GL1) Manna Lithium deposit and adjacent to Breaker Resources’ (ASX:BRB) Lake Roe Gold Project.

“The acquisition of this tenement builds on our footprint of highly prospective and strategic tenure which sits in proximity to some of the most prolific lithium and gold projects in Western Australia,” CEO James Wilson said.

“The new lease covers 24.8km2 of greenstone and intrusive units and has seen limited drill testing with modern exploration methods.

“We are delighted to have secured this ground and look forward to starting work as soon as the tenement is granted.”

And AXP Energy (ASX:AXP) has increased its 2P Reserves at its Appalachian Basin leases to 29.7 billion cubic feet of naturalgas, 1.14 million barrels of oil and 1.18 million barrels of NGLs.
