ASX stocks are on track to finish the week on a down note, as Australia responds to the emergence of the latest COVID-19 crisis — this time in NSW.

As of this morning, the Northern Beaches cluster has grown to 28 and even snuck across the Queensland border, with one case detected on the Sunshine Coast.

As NSW prepares for the prospect of a COVID-19 Christmas, travel stocks got sold off as the ASX200 dipped by around 0.5 per cent into midday trade.

But those falls paled in comparison to the likes of insurers QBE and Genworth, which both tanked hard on earnings downgrades.

And Mesoblast (ASX:MSB) was again the talk of the market after reporting disappointing trial results on its stem cell COVID-19 treatment.

With NSW contract tracers having a busy Friday, other states around the country are getting twitchy. Initial travel restrictions are in play and may get tougher over the coming days.

But plenty of NSW punters weren’t waiting to find out, racing to Sydney airport for an early flight out this morning before any walls go up.

While the broader market was more subdued, the IPO party is still in full swing as WA explorer Desert Metals (ASX:DM1) joined the boards and promptly ripped higher by more than 100 per cent.

Also on the winner’s list was hospitality company Donaco International (ASX:DNA), which jumped after announcing a positive earnings result for October and November.

The company said it generated EBITDA of $US540,000 and $US800,000 for the two months respectively, following the reopening of two hotels — the Star Vegas Resort and Club in Cambodia and the Aristo International Hotel in Vietnam.
