Water is wet, the sky is blue and two things continue to go up; COVID-19 case numbers in NSW, and the ASX.

Local stocks are tracking higher to end the week, with the ASX 200 climbing by around 0.5% into midday trade.

Reversing the trend of previous session, larger companies are outperforming while the microcap Emerging Companies index edged lower, which would mark its first day in the red since August 5.

With NSW reporting a record high number of 390 COVID-19 cases, the WA government has issued new restrictions on anyone travelling from Australia’s most populous state, which include proof of vaccinations where applicable.

There were no major changes across asset classes, in what’s shaping up as a fairly placid session on Asian markets to end the week.
