ASX Small Cap Lunch Wrap: Trump gets the axe, doctors get the vaxx

Markets took on a more subdued note in the run-in to Christmas this morning, after more falls on Wall Street.

Once again the losses were felt more keenly at the small end, with the ASX200 trading close to flat while the Small Ordinaries Index fell more than one per cent.

Iron ore finally came off the boil, with spot prices falling by 3.6 per cent overnight to $US154.37 a tonne.

The US session was punctuated by political developments, as a number of key battleground states confirmed the election results to formally recognise Joe Biden as President-elect.

Also overnight, the first three million doses of the Pfizer-BioNTech COVID-19 vaccine began making their way across the US.

It marks the commencement of a long and complex logistics campaign to deploy the vaccine where it’s needed most as the country’s coronavirus death toll nears 300,000.

After two days of falls, US stock stock futures are pointing slightly higher with the S&P500 up 0.25 per cent.

The pre-Christmas IPO rush is in full swing, and new entrant Akora Resources (ASX:AKO) led the small cap pack this morning with a strong debut.

After raising $5m with a listing price of 25c, Akora — which operates an iron ore exploration project in Madagascar — rose to 44c by midday trade — a gain of more than 80 per cent.
