The Dow Jones index punched through 30,0000 points for the first time in history as investors predict economic recovery, vaccine rollouts, and a smooth(ish) transfer of power in the White House in 2021.
But how did the Dow – which measures the performance of 30 large Wall Street companies — hit record levels after such a terrible year? A brief technical analysis:
Accurate from r/wallstreetbets
“If 2020 has shown us anything it is that stock markets have a tremendous ability to look past bad news if there is sun on the horizon,” says Ross Mayfield, investment strategy analyst at Baird.
The biggest winners this week have been beleaguered oil and gas stocks, which are set for their best month on record as crude prices hit eight-month highs.
“Oil acts as an economic bellwether and the commodity has been on a tear for the past month, rising by more than 20 per cent in value as markets start to become more optimistic about economic activity amid positive vaccine news,” says Russ Mould, investment director at AJ Bell.

Despite weakening from a morning high of +1.03 per cent, the benchmark ASX200 index was still up 0.87 per cent to 6,701.6 points by 12:30pm eastern time.
