ASX Lunch Wrap: Small caps bounce back after Thursday’s selloff

Small cap shares have clawed back most of yesterday’s losses with a solid performance this morning.

Just after noon, the Small Ordinaries index was up 41.8 points, or 1.36 per cent, to 3,127.6, after closing down 69.6 points on Thursday.

Small caps are outperforming their larger peers, with the ASX200 up 0.78 per cent, and the ASX20 up just 0.42 per cent.

The Small Ords index – which tracks the 200 companies in the ASX300 but not the ASX100 – is still down for the week, by 40.7 points or 1.28 per cent.

Most sectors are up, save energy and financials which have edged down. Health care is the biggest gainer, up 2.5 per cent on a good day for blood products giant CSL (ASX:CSL).

GME Resources (ASX:GME) – which shares a stock code with Reddit favourite Gamestop (NYSE:GME) – shot up 52.9 per cent to 13c before being put into a trading halt so the WA nickel-copper explorer could answer an ASX price query.

GME shares have been trading around 4c to 7c for the past year before surging in the past few days as punters apparently confused its stock code with the videogame store owner.

Gamestop shares finished down 44.3 per cent to $US193.6 – up from around $US20 at the start of the year – after Robinhood and other brokers restricted trade in the securities.

Victory Mines (ASX:VIC), Investigator Resources (ASX:IVR) and Pilot Energy (ASX:PGY) were all up on quarterly activities reports.

First Au (ASX:FAU) climbed on strong assay results from drilling at its Gimlet gold project near Kalgoorlie, WA.
